Commemorative coins from the series football World Cup 2018 in Russia

What interesting things await us from base metals according to the 2017 coin release plan?

Of course, a continuation of the 2-ruble series. At the end of 2016, there are 7 of them (they were still put into circulation back in 2000), but the Central Bank of the Russian Federation promises to issue two more new coins in 2017: Kerch and Sevastopol!

It is also expected to issue 3 bimetallic coins, with a face value of 10 rubles each, from two series: and. It's predictable, but still very interesting!

The peculiarity of the 2017 coin release plan is that not a single one will be issued.

And perhaps that’s all - the Bank of Russia plans to issue only 5 commemorative coins made of base metals in 2017. Not enough and it’s very frustrating!

It is not easy to write a review of the release of future coins when not only its reverse image is unknown, but even its approximate description. But still, according to the annual “Plan for the release of commemorative and investment coins into circulation”, already prepared by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, we can find out what new items and continuations of already beloved series we should expect in 2017

Base metal commemorative coins

There are still noticeably fewer of them in the plan than in the previous 2016. The absence of steel tens from the list will seem unusual. Series "Cities" military glory", which seemed eternal, froze in anticipation of whether another Russian city would receive honorary status. So far there are forty-five cities. And the last four coins were minted in 2016. Not a single coin of a five-ruble denomination has been announced. However, the state of affairs may well change before and even during 2017.

Bimetallic 10 rubles 2017

The "Russian Federation" series will be supplemented by two regions. They will be the Ulyanovsk and Tambov regions. Each of this pair of coins is planned to be produced in ten million copies (the base mintage for this series). It is still impossible to predict with 100% accuracy what the coat of arms of each region will appear on the commemorative coin. After all, many collectors will vividly tell the story of how a crown that was not supposed to be there appeared on the coat of arms of the Sverdlovsk region. For now, we’ll just fantasize about the type of coins of the future. A little time will pass, and real coins will show how groundless our predictions were.

In the “Ancient Cities of Russia” series, only one coin will be released, dedicated to the city of Olonets, located in the Republic of Karelia. It was founded in 1137, and it will be some two decades away from its ten-century anniversary at the time of issue of the coin. What remarkable building will grace the coin reverse? Here fantasy can offer many options, so we won’t go into specifics. Most likely it will be the Cathedral of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. But what is its incarnation? Ancient, with a bell tower? Or modern, without it?

However, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary also has a chance to appear on the reverse. However, the main news for numismatists will be the message regarding the material of the bimetal blanks. Now the ring is not made of pure brass. What remains of the brass is the galvanic coating on steel, which was successfully tested on penny denominations in 2015. The inner insert will also be steel, but with a nickel galvanic coating.

2 rubles "Hero Cities"

The “Hero Cities” series will be expanded by Kerch and Sevastopol. In 2000, when seven coins of the series were issued, these two cities were outside the territory of the Russian Federation. The Bank of Russia decided not to leave these now commemorative coins Russian cities. Let's imagine again what these coins could look like. And in six months or a year we will see how different our forecast is from real life.

Let us note that the material for the coins “Hero City Kerch” and “Hero City Sevastopol” will also not be nickel silver, but steel with a nickel galvanic coating. The planned circulation is five million copies.

In 2017, the second twenty-five-ruble coin, part of the “2018 FIFA World Cup” series, should be released. Considering that the Sochi coins practically did not enter circulation, the circulation was initially made like that of “Fakel”: twenty million. But something tells me that this time it’s not worth looking out for such coins in circulation. However, at the time of writing this article, this position is not yet available in the 2017 release plan.

Investment coins of 2017

As before, we can make investments using coins from the “St. George the Victorious” series. All that remains is to choose whether to buy in the hope of profit silver coin (31.1 grams) with the image of a legendary horseman slaying a serpent, or take a swing at gold (7.78 grams). It is unclear whether both courts will work on these coins. But based on the experience of previous years, collectors of this series should prepare four seats.

Commemorative coins made of precious metals

The ruble denomination in silver will be presented to us by the returning series “Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”, the next three coins of which will be dedicated to motorized rifle troops. Rubles are minted from 925 silver. Representatives of the “Red Book” have not yet been announced, but the coins have been described - a continuation of the series “Outstanding Personalities of Russia”. In 2017 we will see the artist Aivazovsky, the geographer Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky and the poet Balmont. The colorful series “Russian Diamond Fund” will also continue. Of the six specified coins, the description of which is not yet available, two are promised in a special color design. We will not make predictions here, but simply for information we will post two versions of the previous year’s coin “Star of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.”

Along with the review of coins for the coming 2017, you also received a little fantasy in the form of forecasts. Look for real coins with current prices as they are released into circulation in the catalog of our website.
