Nenets Autonomous Okrug is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation, which is part of the Arkhangelsk Region of the North-West Federal District. This is the least populated subject of the Russian Federation; 43 thousand people live on an area of ​​177 thousand km². More than half of the total population is concentrated in the administrative center and the only city in the Naryan-Mar district.

The Nenets Autonomous Okrug is located in the northwestern part of the Russian Federation and is part of the Northwestern Federal District of the same name. A significant part of the region is located beyond the Arctic Circle, and it includes the Vaygach Islands, the Yugorsky Peninsula, which separates the two seas, and the Kanin Peninsula. The geographic location of the district in the Arctic zone and the influence of the Arctic Ocean caused cold winters, the air temperature in which rises as we move inland from -22 ° C to -12 ° C.
