Review of the gaming keyboard CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i. CM Storm Trigger: The Gamer's Trigger Programming for Beginners

The new top-of-the-line CM Storm keyboard for gamers has arrived in our test lab. It uses modern mechanical keys, but other equipment is also promising. You get adjustable keyboard backlighting, macro and media keys, 6-key Anti-Ghosting Rollover, built-in USB hub - CM Storm has everything your heart desires. Add to that an attractive price for a backlit mechanical keyboard. But how well will she perform in reality?

Mechanical keyboards remained niche products for a long time, they were produced by a small number of companies, few enthusiasts used them. But in recent months, more and more users are beginning to feel the benefits of this type of keyboard. The industry has reacted accordingly, and today mechanical keyboards are produced by major companies such as Corsair, Thermaltake or Razer.

The Cooler Master CM Storm brand, which is aimed at gamers, is also well known in the market. Not so long ago, the company introduced the "spartan" compact keyboard Quickfire Rapid, but Trigger is able to attract even more attention. It combines mechanical keys, an impressive feature set and an attractive price. This keyboard for gamers not only features MX Black mechanical keys, but also red backlighting, macro functions, 6-key Anti-Ghosting Rollover, multimedia keys and a USB hub. And all this wealth can be bought for 113 euros in Europe. In Russia, CM Storm Trigger has not yet appeared at the time of publication. For a keyboard, the price may seem high. But if you look at the prices of other backlit mechanical keyboards, the impression quickly changes. For example, Mionix Zibal or QPad MK-85 keyboards (test and review) will cost or

The Taiwanese company Cooler Master is well known in the IT industry due to the development and production of a wide range of computer components, accessories, mobile devices and gaming peripherals. The latter is part of a wide range of CM Storm solutions. One of its interesting representatives is the gaming keyboard.

This model has a classic look. Its design is made using quality materials, and mechanical keys are equipped with Cherry MX switches. Delivery and equipment

The keyboard comes in a relatively small black cardboard box. The packaging design is discreet, but quite informative. The back side contains a large image of the novelty, the model name, the logo of the manufacturer's brand and the line of devices, as well as several icons that inform about the features of the novelty (Cherry MX switches, full LED backlighting, support for NKRO technology, the ability to save backlight profiles, "Turbo" mode ). The back side allows you to get acquainted with a more detailed list of features of this model in several languages, including Russian.

The CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i keyboard comes with quick guide user, a replaceable L-shaped power cable (micro-USB ↔ USB 2.0) and tweezers for removing keycaps for maintenance.

Appearance and arrangement of elements

Probably, many people have already formed a persistent stereotype that gaming keyboards are bulky devices with a considerable number of design optimizations that immediately fall into the eye. Contrary to this image, CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i is made in an understated classic style. It lacks bright elements and glossy inserts, which is a rather practical solution. The only thing that stands out is the absence of a numeric keypad, which, combined with narrow bezels, has a positive effect on the compactness of the keyboard. Considering the gaming orientation of the novelty, this block can really be of little use, but it takes up a lot of space, especially when transporting it to a LAN party. Despite its compactness (359 x 138 mm), the keyboard turned out to be rather high (39 mm), therefore, subjectively, the presence of an under-palm area would not hurt. In addition, its weight (932 g) is comparable to solutions that have a digital block (for example, ASUS Echelon Mechanical Keyboard - 998 g). However, a significant mass is only to her advantage. This guarantees high stability of the keyboard placement on the work surface, which eliminates unwanted shifts during intense gaming battles.

The body of the CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i is made of high-quality ABS plastic, which not only looks quite stylish and expensive, but also provides a pleasant tactile sensation, high wear resistance, and almost no fingerprints. The top and side faces have a rubberized coating, which is very similar to a soft touch.

In turn, the lower one is represented by the usual, somewhat rough surface, on which fingerprints are clearly visible. However, they are most noticeable on the keycaps, which have a somewhat glossy rubberized finish. In general, the case is characterized by a very good build quality, which is confirmed by the absence of any backlash and gaps. And with active use, the keyboard is absolutely not pressed through and there are no extra sounds.

On the bottom there are four oblong rubberized legs and two plastic ones. The former provide a secure fixation on smooth surfaces, while the latter make it possible to change the angle of the keyboard. There is also a sticker with technical information and the "CM Storm" logo.

The front part of the case is flat and devoid of decorative ornaments. Only on the side faces (with a transition to the front) there is a figured recess, which somewhat diversifies the strict look of the keyboard. On the front of the recess there is a connector for connecting a cable, and on the opposite side - the name of the line. The cable itself (1.8 m long) is protected by a nylon braid and has two gold-plated connectors (L-shaped micro-USB and direct USB 2.0), framed by stiffeners. It should be noted that this wire can be used without problems to recharge mobile devices (for example, at night), and if it is lost, you can easily find a replacement for it.

The layout of the keys is presented in the classic American (US ANSI) version with a single-level and oblong and , which eliminates the need for getting used to, and allows you to immediately effectively interact with the device (both in the gameplay and when typing a test). Of the additional keys, there is only one, which is located in the place of the "Context Menu" button.

The keys of this model are made on the basis of Cherry MX Brown mechanical switches (there are versions with Cherry MX Blue and Cherry MX Red). Note that they can be called a compromise or universal solution designed for games and typing. The tactile feel of the button actuation is in the middle of the stroke, which makes it possible to track this moment. This is quite important when performing dynamic operations in games. The keys have high caps with a classic trapezoidal shape and a cylindrical bevel of the top face. Their dimensions near the base are 18 x 18 mm, and in the pressing area - 15 x 13 mm. Under the caps (in the upper part) are LEDs.

The key travel is quite pleasant, moderately elastic and without a characteristic click at the time of operation. In any case, they are noticeably louder than membrane ones, but the sound from them appears only when fully pressed (all the way). If you learn to press only at the moment of operation, then the keyboard can become completely silent (in theory).

The markings are made by laser engraving in a single (white) color scheme. Latin has rather large characters (located in the upper central part of the caps) with a somewhat unusual font, which is quite readable. Cyrillic is much smaller, but in general it also reads well (depending on the lighting conditions in the room).

In general, we have a classic, comfortable and compact keyboard that has a discreet appearance and is not burdened by a large number of keys that are not always needed. As befits a product of this class, the CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i is characterized by the high quality of the materials used and the workmanship itself.

An important feature of the CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i (apart from the aforementioned switches) is the presence of a very bright white LED backlighting of the keys, which is further enhanced by the use of a white base under the buttons themselves. There is the ability to change the brightness within 5 levels of gradations (including the “Off” mode), as well as as many as 8 (officially 5 is indicated, and additional ones appeared in latest version keyboard microcode) backlight modes: Disabled, Full All Keys, Flashing All Keys, Full All Keys with Dimming on Press (re-ignite when released), ActivLite 1 (pressed key lights up, released - it goes out), "ActivLite 2" (the pressed key glows, the released one fades out smoothly), "ActivLite 3" (the horizontal and vertical row is lit relative to the pressed key) and "Illumination of the WASD-block and arrows". It should be noted that due to the peculiarities of the location of the LEDs (in the upper part of the base of the buttons), there is not a very uniform illumination of the keys. That is, the main ones (Latin) are highlighted perfectly, and the rest (including Cyrillic) are satisfactorily highlighted, but this creates a kind of delimitation of characters. 128 KB of built-in memory is provided for storing custom backlight settings profiles. A visual demonstration of the operation of the keyboard is well illustrated by the video below.

Demonstration of different key backlight modes in the CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i gaming keyboard

The new product supports a considerable number of functional actions that are assigned to the system (activated in combination with the button) and [F]-keys.

A number of keys - is responsible for setting the LED backlight. Keys - are provided for storing backlight profiles. The number - is responsible for the speed of change in button activations (a useful feature for some games). This is the Turbo mode mentioned above. The essence of his work is that normal mode one keystroke corresponds to a single repetition of the action. And when the "Turbo" mode is activated, pressing and holding the key corresponds to a multiple of the repetitions of its action (1 / 2 / 4 / 8). Multimedia functions are placed on the system keys (they allow you to control the media player and the system volume). The key combination + locks / unlocks the key, which prevents unwanted window minimization during the game. It should be noted that there is no special software, so you should use additional utilities to configure or remap the keys.

Worthy of special attention is the fact that CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i in the Windows OS environment has full support for the “NKRO” mode (the ability to simultaneously press an unlimited number of keys without blocking) when connected using a USB 2.0 interface (traditionally, this mode is available when connected only to PS/2). In other cases, the Key Rollover function will work in "6KRO" mode, that is, it correctly handles only six simultaneously pressed keys.

Impression from work

The CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i gaming keyboard has not only a nice appearance, but also can offer relatively compact dimensions and an optimal set of buttons for many gamers. In addition, the novelty is made using high quality and quite practical materials.

Thanks to the classic keyboard layout, you do not have to get used to or adapt to working with it, but you can immediately work efficiently. The Cherry MX Brown mechanical switches used provide a compromise solution for gaming and comfortable typing. The keys have a pleasant and moderately elastic travel with a clear feeling of actuation. So, they are somewhat louder than conventional membrane counterparts, but the sound appears only when fully pressed all the way, so it can be avoided by pressing only until the moment of operation. Subjectively, for more comfortable work, there is not enough sub-palm area.

An important advantage of CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i is the presence of bright LED backlighting of the keys, which has as many as eight operating modes with the possibility of flexible settings and saving up to five user profiles. In practice, this solution looks quite impressive. In addition, multimedia control functions are implemented. Gamers will love the key lock feature and Turbo mode. An alternative action is activated by simultaneously pressing the corresponding buttons with the key, which is quite a convenient solution.

One cannot but rejoice at the fact that the new product has full support for the “NKRO” mode ( unlimited amount keys pressed simultaneously) for Windows when connected via USB 2.0. In addition, the cable itself is replaceable, so it can be easily replaced if needed.

It is rather strange to see a gaming keyboard without special proprietary software and macros, which predetermines the need to look for alternative utilities to expand the functionality of CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i. This is probably the only noticeable drawback of the device.

Summing up the acquaintance with the gaming keyboard, we can safely state that Cooler Master engineers managed to create something interesting not only for modern gamers, but also for lovers of stylish and high-quality devices. The novelty received a classic design with the use of high-quality materials. And with support for Cherry MX Brown switches, it strikes a balance between gaming and work comfort. Despite its compact size, the keyboard has retained a fairly high functionality.

One of the main advantages and features of the novelty is an excellent LED backlight with a large number of interesting modes of operation and flexible options regarding settings. In addition, gamers will like the key lock feature and the Turbo mode. Another sign of the gaming orientation of the keyboard is the full support of the "NKRO" mode (unlimited number of simultaneously pressed keys) when working in Windows and connected using the USB 2.0 interface.

A little disappointing in the novelty is only the lack of special proprietary software and macros, which predetermines the need to look for alternative utilities to expand the functionality of the keyboard.

All in all, the CM Storm Quick Fire Rapid-i is a great all-rounder for gaming and work, with a discreet appearance, high quality workmanship and fairly wide functionality.

Advantages:

  • strict and practical appearance;
  • high quality workmanship;
  • standard key layout;
  • mechanical switches Cherry MX Brown;
  • detachable cable with gold-plated micro-USB and USB 2.0 connectors;
  • support for a large number of additional functions;
  • support for "Turbo" mode
  • the ability to block the key;
  • bright LED backlight with a large number of modes and flexible settings;
  • support for the Key Rollover function in NKRO and 6KRO variations.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | Introduction

What is the main weapon in the hands of a professional gamer? Of course, the mouse - it is with its help that all accurate shots, sharp, and not very, movements are carried out. However, the keyboard also plays an important role in the gameplay. Here, all the little things are important - from the response time and clarity of pressing, to tactile sensations, ergonomics, etc.

Many computer accessory companies produce keyboards designed specifically for active gamers. I must say that, unlike mice, where all manufacturers supply sensors with high DPI values in pursuit of maximum clarity, the approach to creating gaming keyboards varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

In our today's review, we will get acquainted with the philosophy that Cooler Master professes in this case. On our test table - a junior gaming keyboard from this company - CM Storm QuickFire Rapid.

Box CM Storm QuickFire Rapid made in the traditional aggressive gaming style for products from CM Storm.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid Gaming Keyboard Package Contents

In addition to the keyboard itself CM Storm QuickFire Rapid, the box contains instructions, a USB-miniUSB cable for connecting the keyboard to a computer, a USB-PS / 2 adapter, a set of replacement keys, and a key that facilitates the process of replacing them.

USB cable included CM Storm QuickFire Rapid- not exactly normal. Outside, it is covered with a tough protective braid with a low coefficient of friction, which will allow it to easily slide on the table and not cling to its corners, and also protects the wire from mechanical damage and chafing. The cable also has very tenacious plugs that sit very tightly in the connectors and reduce the likelihood of accidental disconnection. After all, it would be very unpleasant if this happened in the middle of a gaming tournament.

The set of replacement keys includes four red buttons with arrows on top and letters W, A, S, D at the ends, designed to replace the corresponding letter keys, as well as two buttons with the CoolerMaster logo that can replace the Ctrl, Alt, FN or Windows keys .

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | Appearance, design

Frame CM Storm QuickFire Rapid made of matte rubberized plastic, which is not as spectacular in appearance as glossy, but it is much more practical: it does not show grease fingerprints, and it is more resistant to scratches.

Workmanship CM Storm QuickFire Rapid causes exclusively positive emotions. The design is devoid of backlash, squeaks and other similar troubles.

Among the most "gaming" accessories CM Storm QuickFire Rapid stands out for its rather calm design - you can guess about the gaming purpose of this keyboard only by a few branded "lights" on its body and "Windows" buttons.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid Gaming Keyboard

Another "gaming" feature CM Storm QuickFire Rapid"pops up" when you take this keyboard in your hands: it turns out to be surprisingly heavy. Decent weight makes the keyboard more stable, prevents it from sliding on the table. Contribute to this and rubber gaskets located on its bottom.

But the folding legs, which increase the angle of the keyboard, on the contrary, go against stability: when using them CM Storm QuickFire Rapid slides no less actively than any conventional keyboard - and its right side slides more than the left.

Gaming keyboard CM Storm QuickFire Rapid: folding "legs"

The reason for this sliding, most likely, is that the legs CM Storm QuickFire Rapid are made of plastic and have a very smooth surface. It would be possible to make the legs less slippery by equipping them with rubber pads - perhaps some enthusiasts will decide to make such a refinement.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid Gaming Keyboard: mini-USB connector

Connector for USB-miniUSB cable, which CM Storm QuickFire Rapid connects to a computer, is located in a rectangular groove on its bottom. Three grooves extend from this groove, designed for cable laying. The cable is held in the groove by small protrusions located on the edges of the latter.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | Keys

Key sizes and shape CM Storm QuickFire Rapid- typical for most "desktop" keyboards. Their location is also typical - they are divided into groups and installed close to each other; there are no interesting "chips", like gaming "discs" here. The designations are applied to the keys by means of laser engraving, so they will not be erased from intensive use.

The keys do not have backlighting - this option is present only in the older models of keyboards from CM Storm - QuickFire Pro and Trigger.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid Gaming Keyboard

There is a function key (FN). By holding it down, using the keys of the F1-F12 row, you can control music / video playback, as well as programmatically adjust the volume. The Fn + F9 combination disables the Windows keys, thereby eliminating the possibility of accidentally pressing them and minimizing the current application. This option is especially useful for gaming championships, where such a situation will lead to very undesirable results.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | Possible types of switches and their features

Before proceeding to describe the impressions of working with CM Storm QuickFire Rapid, let's pay attention to one important point: this keyboard "found in nature" in three variations, which differ in the type of switches used in the keys. All variations use switches from Cherry MX, however, the switch models are different: Black, Brown and Blue. Find out which switches are set in a particular instance CM Storm QuickFire Rapid you can use the picture on the package, or the model code (for keyboards with Black switches, it contains the GKCC1 character set, for Brown and Blue - GKCM1 and GKCL1, respectively).

The Cherry MX Black switches have a stiff action, with the key actuation point being at the same level as when reset, making it easy to press the same key multiple times in a row.

Cherry MX Blue have a much less tight travel than Black, and their actuation point is below the cusp point - in order for the computer to "catch the command" you need to press the key to the end, while to press the key again, you must completely release it.

Cherry MX Brown switches are an intermediate option between Black and Blue. The trigger and return points are on the same level; at the same time, in terms of stiffness, they are comparable to Cherry MX Blue.

According to many users, Cherry MX Black keyboards are the most comfortable for gaming. The tightness of the move here falls on the hand - thanks to it, the likelihood of accidentally pressing the "wrong" key is reduced. Cherry MX Blue is considered the best option for printing, while Cherry MX Brown is equally good for typing and gaming.

Our editors got the option CM Storm QuickFire Rapid with Cherry MX Black gaming switches. We decided to test this keyboard in both "gaming" and "office" modes.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | Usage experience: office work

First "working" feature CM Storm QuickFire Rapid with Cherry MX Black switches, which I would like to pay attention to is noise - when you press the keys, you hear quite loud clicks, similar to those that could be heard from the keyboards of the eighties and nineties. For this reason alone, this keyboard is not the best candidate for the role of "office workhorse", especially if your work involves typing long texts - its active "clatter" can interfere with the peace of colleagues.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid Gaming Keyboard

And Cherry MX Black switches are not conducive to "typing" something voluminous - their stroke is very tight, so long and fast "tapping" on them turns into fatigue, and sometimes numbness of the fingers.

The author of this review tried several times to use CM Storm QuickFire Rapid for typing - and every time it ended with a joyful return to the keyboard of a Sony Vaio laptop. In general, office work is clearly not the path where the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid with Cherry MX Black switches can show its best qualities, which, in principle, was to be expected. Perhaps keyboard variations with Cherry MX Brown or Blue switches would do a better job of "office business".

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | User Experience: Gaming

However, when it comes to games, the experience of "talking" with CM Storm QuickFire Rapid take on a completely different tone. Here, first of all, you pay attention to the fact that in the "lying" position (when folding legs are not used), the keyboard very confidently holds the "grip" to the table surface - even with a light hand strike on the sidewall, it practically does not slip.

Gaming keyboard CM Storm QuickFire Rapid: with "gaming" arrows

The taut key travel does not provide any significant advantages in terms of convenience, but, according to subjective sensations, adds a bit of aggression to the gameplay.

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid | Conclusion

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid devoid of "chips" from the category of backlighting or special "game" shape and layout of the keys. Its creators, obviously, decided not to reinvent the wheel, not to copy existing gaming solutions and limited themselves to the classic form factor, separating the excess (digit block).

But what then gives this keyboard the right to be called a gaming keyboard, and why is its price so high?

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid- this is such a minimalistic professional tool, without unnecessary "bells and whistles", but with excellently implemented basic functionality. Backlights, gaming discs, wrist rests, and even additional function keys are unlikely to help the player win a serious championship. But the precise operation of the keys, strong "clutch" of the keyboard with the tabletop, reliable cable fastening, the Windows key blocking function, give confidence that the keyboard will not let you down at the decisive moment, will not cause defeat, and even "smooth out" some of the player's oversights.

Specifications

Number of buttons: 109 pcs. * Button resource: up to 50 million clicks* Materials: plastic * Color: GREY-black * Dimensions: 16.2x47.5x2.5 cm * Price for August 2012: 6300 rubles

Mechanical keyboards are back in fashion. If three years ago the creators of “clicking” input devices were known without a doubt, today every self-respecting manufacturer starts the “mechanics” in its assortment. That's cooler master did not fall behind and released its representatives, replenishing the game line C.M. Storm three models: Quick Fire Pro, Quick Fire Rapid and trigger. We decided to start our acquaintance with the latter, because its developers call it “the uncompromising weapon of the players”.

Case, buttons and millions of clicks

The keyboard is delivered in a powerful cardboard box with high-quality printing. Inside - instructions, a disk with drivers and the device itself. It looks impressive: sharp bevels, depressions and depressed ribs. At the same time, the case itself is small: quite standard 47.5 cm long and 16.2 cm wide, but the weight is healthy - 1.2 kg. Given five rubber pads and a pair of retractable legs made of the same material, it is almost impossible to inadvertently move such a mass off the table. We did not understand why the Trigger came out as heavy as a brick: the entire surface is covered with a soft touch that is pleasant to the touch, and God knows what is hidden under it.

Of course, the buttons with the Cherry MX Black mechanism played their role. They are distinguished from the usual soft "toptalok" by the presence of actively resisting hard springs. The advantage of the method is a smooth, tight stroke, the highest sensitivity and a long time between failures. Unlike membranes used in the vast majority of competitors, Trigger elastic elements almost do not lose their properties and can withstand up to 50 million clicks, which in human terms means 300 clicks per second for 115 days.

Ergonomics and ease of use

One of the main advantages of the Trigger is good ergonomics. Cooler Master did not get smart with the buttons and arranged them in a standard order, removed only the inconvenient "Win" in games, replacing it with its own "Storm", through which many functions are called, such as sound or player control. The size of the buttons themselves is 1 cm, the distance between them is 0.5 cm. A red LED with three degrees of brightness was placed under each key. For those who do not like to crawl their wrists on the table, there is a wide removable stand made of rubberized material. In general, everything possible was done for the convenience of the players. The only thing is that at first it is difficult to adjust to the tight spring mechanism, especially for those who are used to typing a lot.

Programming for beginners

The gaming essence of the novelty lies in the ability to use macros. Programmable as an additional five keys on the left side, and the main layout (including "Storm", which can return the functionality of "Win"). For this, a special program is included.

The process looks like this. Select the desired key and hang a combination on it. The recording window resembles a musical score: rulers laid out along the time axis. At the same time, up to ten clicks are activated, and the sequence itself stretches for half a minute. You can think of anything: from auto-buying weapons in Counter-Strike to applying all the buffs required for a raid with a single button. However, when the macro is run, the keys on the keyboard are disabled. Cranking out a tricky thing like "turned on the attacking rotation and run around the enemy" will not work.

It is not necessary to use software to record, macros can be written directly in the game, just hold down Storm + Alt for a couple of seconds. Without software, you can switch between profiles so that, for example, you do not suffer when chatting.

Eventually

CM Storm Trigger is a great addition to the Cooler Master gaming line. And although the keyboard has offensive restrictions on the use of macros, Trigger is almost ideal as a purely gaming assistant: tight buttons will not let you miss the desired key and help you avoid repeated pressing, the backlight will allow you to work in the dark, and macro support will be a good help in any game. Only now such assistance will cost as much as 6300 rubles.

PROS:

  • great build
  • mechanical keys
  • long time between failures
  • macro support

MINUSES:

  • buttons are disabled when running a macro
  • high price
