Pai Gow poker - game rules. Pai go poker is an interesting kind of poker

Pai gow poker) - a card game where a player, using seven cards, tries to make two combinations of five and two cards, which are poker hands will be stronger than the enemy. Pai go poker borrowed part of the name and general principle from Chinese game pai gou, which uses a Chinese domino to play.

Pai go poker was invented in the early 1980s in the United States by Fred Wolf and quickly became very popular. Fred Wolf owns the patent for this game and more whole line other casino games.

Rules of the game

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck plus one joker. There can be up to six players at the table plus the dealer, players play against the dealer. Players place bets allowed by table limits.

Each of the participants in the game is dealt seven cards face down. The player must divide these cards into two parts - the "top" (eng. high) and "bottom" (eng. low). The upper hand has five cards, the lower one - two, the combinations are laid face-up on the places marked on the table. In this case, the combination on the lower hand cannot be stronger than on the upper one (that is, you cannot put a pair down, and just the highest card up). If you don't follow this rule, you automatically lose. After all the players have made their choice, the dealer also lays out his cards (the dealer follows the fixed rules for splitting cards) and the combinations are compared.

The comparison of the top combination is based on the usual poker hand rating (from a royal flush to the highest card), the comparison of low hands is also based on the poker rating, only two combinations are possible - a pair or a high card. If both hands of the dealer hit the player, the player loses. If one of the player's hands beats the dealer's hand, and the other loses, a draw is declared, and the player's bet is returned. If both of the player's hands hit the dealer's cards, the player wins 1: 1 minus 5% of bank commissions. If one of the hands turns out to be a draw, then it is usually interpreted in favor of the dealer (the player loses this hand).

Separately, it is necessary to say about the joker. The Joker can substitute any card in a five-card hand (or seven-card hand if a bonus bet is placed) to make a straight, flush, straight flush or royal flush. If these combinations cannot be made, then the joker is considered an ace. On the lower hand, the joker is always considered an ace.

Optimal strategy

The optimal strategy is to correctly split the cards between the upper and lower hands, in most online and real casinos, the player can ask the dealer to split his cards according to house rules that are fairly close to optimal. Actually the table optimal strategy for pai go poker is very complex and large, but there are a number of simple rules that are close to the optimum:

  1. There is no combination: leave the highest card on the upper hand, the next two - on the lower hand.
  2. One pair: leave a pair on the upper hand, the two highest of the remaining cards on the bottom hand.
  3. Two pairs:
    • Do not split if your total points are nine or less with a king or ace;
    • Do not split if you have fifteen or less points with an ace;
    • Exception: split 7s and 2s with king or higher;
    • Exception: split kings and deuces with an ace;
    • Exception: split jacks and fours with an ace;
    • Exception: do not separate sevens and eights (nines) with an ace,
    • Where the points correspond to the face value of the cards (2 - for twos, 11 - jack, 12 - queen, 13 - king, 14 - ace, that is, jacks and fours give the sum of points 4 + 11 = 15).
  4. Three pairs: top pair on the bottom hand.
  5. Three of a Kind: leave a three at the top, two high cards on the bottom hand, with the exception of three aces: two aces remain on the top hand, one on the bottom hand.
  6. Two threes: from the top three, a pair goes to the lower hand.
  7. Straights and Flushes: We keep straights and flushes if there is no double pair, otherwise we divide according to the rules of two pairs.
  8. Full house: divide by three and two (if there are two pair or two threes, we put the top pair down).
  9. Four of a kind: four of a kind from two to six - do not divide; square from seven to ten - divide if there is no king or higher; quads from jack to king - split if there is no ace or higher; ace of four - split if there is no other pair.

By following this strategy, you will get a mathematical expectation of the game on the order of -2.7%.

Pai Gow is probably one of the most difficult to explain casino games. Although the ranking of the combinations is somewhat convoluted, the concept of the game is quite simple. Having understood the rules of the game, you can find a lot of its advantages over others. gambling... It is funny, the casino winning percentage is not big, it is unique, as it is played on dominoes. The Chinese, who are credited with the authorship, have played Pai Gou for centuries. Today, Pai Gos can be played in casinos that target Asian clientele.

Pai Gow is played with a set of 32 dominoes shown below. In this case, some dominoes appear once, and some twice.

The goal of the game is to beat the banker. But, unlike most casino games, in Pai Gow the player can become a banker himself, then the goal is to beat each of the participants. The dealer acts in the same way as the player. When the dealer does not represent the pot, he makes a bet equal to the last bet the banker made against the casino. The dealer always plays according to the rules set by the gambling establishment. If a player wishes to keep the pot, but is not sure about the coverage of all other stakes on the table, he can enter into a stake with the casino. If he made such a choice, then he must make decisions according to the rules of the casino. The opportunity to hold the pot is offered to each player and dealer in turn (counterclockwise).

The game begins with all players placing their bets. The dealer shuffles the dominoes and places them in 8 equal stacks of 4 dominoes each. The players toss to see who will take the first stack. As a rule, the rally takes place using dice... After the first, everyone gets on the stack in turn, counterclockwise. Having received 4 dominoes, each player must split them into two pairs. Each pair of dominoes has a ranking. The player must decide how to distribute his dominoes to the strongest possible pairs. Sometimes the choice is obvious, but often the decision ranges from whether to have a strong pair and a weak pair or two more balanced pairs. After the decision has been reached, each player must place the stronger pair horizontally in front of him on the table and the weaker pair vertically. After all the players have decided, the banker opens his dominoes and lays them out in front of him. Then each player in turn compares his pair of dominoes with the pairs of the banker. If the player wins on both pairs, his bet wins with a 5% commission in favor of the gambling house. If a player loses on both pairs, he completely loses his bet. If one pair wins and the other loses, then it's a draw. After all bets have been settled, the banker pays 5% commission on the net winnings (if any).

The hardest part is remembering the value of all the dominoes. And there is no easy way to do it. There are 992 possible choices if you think mathematically. But due to the double tiles and the fact that the order doesn't matter, the actual quantity is much less. Domino numbers have little to do with ranking. This is more symbolism. Pairs win as follows:

Gee joon

The highest possible pair is Gee Joon ("top pair"), which is made up of these two tiles: 4-2 and 2-1.
In general, 4-2 and 2-1 are kind of jokers, universal tiles, which in other combinations can replace each other to form pairs. That is, 2-1 can be considered as 4-2 and vice versa.

These combinations are made up of tiles of the same amount. They are listed below in order from senior to weakest:

6-6 & 6-6 Heaven
1-1 & 1-1 Earth
4-4 & 4-4 Man
3-1 & 3-1 Goose
5-5 & 5-5 Flower
3-3 & 3-3 Long
2-2 & 2-2 Board
6-5 & 6-5 Hatchet
6-4 & 6-4 Partition
6-1 & 6-1 Long Leg Seven
5-1 & 5-1 Big Head Six
6-3 & 5-4 Jaap Gow - mixed nine
6-2 & 5-3 Jaap Bart - mixed eight
5-2 & 4-3 Jaap Chut - mixed seven
4-1 & 3-2 Jaap Ng - mixed five

As you can see from the table, there is no mathematical relationship in the distribution of combinations, which significantly impairs the perception and study of the game.

6-6 6-3
6-6 5-4
1-1 6-3
1-1 5-4

6-6 5-3
6-6 4-4
1-1 5-3
1-1 4-4

Other combinations

All other combinations are made by addition minus 10 points. For example:

5-6 3-2 = six points.
6-4 4-3 = seven points.
The more points the better.

80% of the entire game is strategy. Since each hand can be played in three different ways, you need to be careful. Getting a very good combination on one pair can lead to a very weak second pair, which will lead to a draw. However, a more balanced high and weak pair can end up winning.

  • 1. If both hands of the dealer are stronger than both hands of the player, then the player loses his bet.
  • 2. If one of the dealer's hands is stronger than the player's hand, and the other is weaker, then a draw is determined and the player's initial bet is returned.
  • 3. If both of the player's hands beat the dealer's hands, the player wins 1 to 1 minus 5% commission.
  • 4. If one of the dealer's hands is equal to the player's corresponding hand, the dealer is declared the winner.

The cards in the hands are compared according to the poker hand table, where the highest combination of the main hand is 5 aces (4 aces + joker). And the highest combination of a weak hand is 2 aces.

It is necessary to take into account the fact that the joker in Pai Gow poker is considered an ace, and when making a straight or flush it can be any card.

Pai Gow Poker - strategy description

The key strategic rule of Pai Gow Poker is that a low hand is not a waste bin where you need to fold regularly. worst cards... In doing this, you need to regularly sacrifice a strong high hand to make two solid card combinations. So, with a full house, you should keep three cards in a high hand and place two cards in a low hand. With high pairs, you must separate them.
To get the most out of Pai Gow Poker, there are two strategies you can use:

  • conservative;
  • aggressive.

They take into account controversial game moments offering optimal solutions. Using a conservative strategy, the poker player keeps most of the strongest combinations in a high hand and places low cards in a low hand, which increases the chance of a draw - a push, and reduces the likelihood of losing, as well as winning.
Aggressive users, on the contrary, try to expand the opportunities for true winning, even when they have to break an almost invincible high card combination to do this, which reduces the likelihood of a push and adds a chance of losing. Many casinos use a conservative strategy that determines the actions of the croupier, regardless of whether he plays for a banker or as an ordinary poker player.
