I present to your attention a master class on the design and implementation of a carved oak chest in the material - Seasons.

Let's divide the whole process into the following stages:
1. Work on sketches and projects.
2. Manufacturing of joinery.
3. Transfer of drawings to wood.
4. Processing the background to a given depth with a hand-held milling machine.
5. Thread.
6. Grinding and finishing.
7. And through all stages - work and communication with the customer.
In the case of a chest, it all starts with the client's desire to see, as a result, a work of art that has artistic value, functionality that pleases the eye, which can be passed on from generation to generation as a family value. And education, exactingness, diversified development mobilize for maximum result... All stages are performed at a high professional level and in the most difficult possible way. For example, suppose that even the lid of the chest will be cut from the inside, and all this is in oak. Calculations for softer rock are also offered, as well as carving using machine tools with software, but the question of the price is not worth it, everything must be cut by hand.
We have known the buyer for a long time, but contacting us with a desire to have furniture made of natural wood still turns out to be quite unexpected, which does not at all prevent from the listed items jointly choosing the chest first. Here is what we are offered as a sample.

It all starts with an idea, and it has become clear. We need to design an oak chest with an attachment - a drawer.
Size: length - 50 cm.
width - 30 cm.
height - 37.5 cm.
As for the shape, the lid of the chest must have an arc.

And what is especially nice is the wish to see as much carving as possible. And as for the ornament, then it falls as a balm on the soul in the form of something Russian-folk and floral.
Work on sketches and projects.
We need paper, pencil, eraser.
As a rule, we carry out several options at once on a given topic. In this case, everything is clear with the form and the main attention is drawn to the plot and ornament. It was decided to develop 4 options, 2 of which are more author's, and 2 based on ancient Russian ornament. Sketches are made for all sides of the chest and the lid. Including the back wall, that is, the rear view. We draw your attention to the fact that the object can have a front and back view, but the customer assumes that the chest moves periodically around the room, and besides, this solution coincides with the original carving in terms of saturation.

These words not only warm and inspire, but also imply hard work on the composition, which is what we need, since the final result depends on the thoughtfulness and integrity of the sketches. It is good when customers have developed taste, education sufficient to solve the most complex tasks... So, fragments of all 4 options. Here they are.

We are inspired, as usual, by the bright traditional Vladimir-Suzdal pattern. Where else can you gain skill if not in white stone carving?

We invest in all 4 options, but a chest is selected based on ancient Russian ornament. Here is one of its sides, we call it the Sun.

We safely switch to carpentry work, nevertheless, the author's thought continues to develop in the heads of the participants, and the chest lives its own life and history. He wants to be different.
Old Russian ornament contains the sun and vegetation in symbolism. And just the decorated back wall, at the most opportune moment, begins to fit into the general outline, not just for the sake of some whim, but a full-fledged fragment of the plot.

And for 4 of its sides it receives 4 seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Winter with buds, Spring with leaves, Summer with flowers, and Autumn with fruits and the chest takes on its 2nd name - Seasons.
Needless to say, under the circumstances, the original version of the sun's chest lid

goes to a change in the ornament and plot. Among the first wishes, in addition to Russian folk and floral, there is also a bird.
In folk art, the image of the Sirin bird is widespread. We are also addressing him. The lid of the chest of the Seasons looks like this

According to popular legend, in the morning on Yablonevy Spas, the bird Sirin flies into the apple orchard, which is sad and crying. And in the afternoon, the Alkonost bird arrives in the apple orchard, which rejoices and laughs. The bird brushes off the living dew from its wings and the fruits are transformed, an amazing power appears in them - all the fruits on the apple trees from this moment become healing.
But that is not all. We do not have a simple future mistress of the chest, although it seems that now there will be no more complications and development. We are wrong. They also follow, perhaps, from the most unusual and highly complex side.
It all starts with the question of whether it is possible to cut out the inner side of the lid. And everything pours out on the Day on the outside and Night on the inside, the Sirin birds fly around the daytime sun, and new character- the personification of wisdom - Owls fly around the night sun.

The customer sees in the final version also a sacred meaning, since by opening the lid of the chest, you can have wisdom hidden inside. It becomes finally clear that with such a unique buyer there is every chance to create a masterpiece.
The work on the composition was colossal, I am not posting all the details here. For example, the birds Sirin and Owls are initially in a static one position. It was decided to arrange them mirrored and, as it were, flying around the sun in a circle.
Carpentry construction.
Due to the overwhelming majority at the Fair of Masters, this stage will be shorter than the others.
First of all, we need dried oak wood in boards of a certain thickness. The prepared boards are processed on a jointing and circular machines. After that, the sawn timber is cut into blanks, the panels are glued together, and the joinery joints of the chest are formed. As a result, we get 3 parts of the chest: the main one, the lid and the attachment-box. Two of these 3 parts: the lid and the main one are cut out according to a composition prepared in advance on a scale of 1 * 1.

Translation of drawings on a tree.
Before switching to 1 * 1 scale when drawing a project, it is better to wait until all the carpentry work on the assembly of the structure is completed. Having the exact dimensions, you can safely prepare tracing paper with a pattern for each side of the chest.
To complete this stage, we need:
- tracing paper with a finished drawing;
- buttons;
- pencil (not too soft so as not to leave dirt on the wood and not too hard, since it is difficult to print).

Spring on the side of the chest.

Fall on the other side of the chest.
Circles in a strip of geometric ornament are made without tracing paper, using a ruler and a pencil separately. It is important to carefully follow where the interweaving occurs in the strip precisely in the graphics, since the geometric strip in the thread has no volume.
It will be better if, after translating the drawing through tracing paper, we once again outline everything along the contour with a pencil. So the graphite will enter the wood even better and will not be smeared from further hand movements. And the hand and eye will finally get used to the invented ornament and will confidently carve.
Processing the background to a given depth with a hand-held milling machine.
It is necessary to choose the optimal size of the cutter so that it can pass without touching the ornament and at the same time it took a lot in one pass. Having set the cutter to a given depth, we go through all the sides of the chest and the lid in this way.

The complexity of the composition affects the execution in the chest material. It is completely impossible to go through the inside of the chest lid with a cutter.

And the areas of the background not selected by the cutter are modified manually with the tool.
Thread.
We need the following cutting tool:
- Bogorodsky knife;
- selections;
- chisels (flat, flat, semicircular).
The entire set must be correctly and competently sharpened.

A poorly sharpened tool can cause more injury than a sharp one, since more force is applied to the thread.
It is not recommended to cut on yourself, on your fingers, only from yourself.
Rest is required when fatigue sets in.
A first aid kit with a bandage and hydrogen peroxide is required.
The carving is done in several stages.
The geometric ornament can be distinguished separately, this is the simplest one in this case.

It is carried out using the Bogorodsky knife.
The rest of the carving begins with processing the background along the contour of the ornament to finish after the cutter using the entire tool.

Next, we set the volume a little, cut the weaves and directly cut out the contours of each element.

Chamfering the edges, adding even more flat-relief threads.

So, we have cut out a floral ornament. The solar symbolism remains and we will cut it counter-relief, that is, inside the surface of the board.

And it was decided not to remove the chamfers from the solar crosses for contrast and highlighting the compositional center.
On the birds of the lid and flowers on the sides, we remove the chamfers.

In the course of work, solutions appear that are tried and do not fit the chest. For example, chains and everything metallic.

Therefore, even the handles are made entirely of wood.

The handles, as an integral part of the entire composition, affecting the integrity, are carefully and carefully designed, based on the general shape of the carpentry and the arc on the top of the lid.
Grinding and finishing.
This step is carried out using medium sanding paper, getting rid of sharp corners and edges on the form and dirt on the threads.
Decorating with mastic of our own production, based on angelica roots, gum, beeswax. Spread on with a brush and rub with a female nylon stocking.
And here's the bottom line!

Winter or back view. Here we see the presence of rare leaves and the absence of flowers.

Spring or side view. The next 2nd side symbolizes Spring with flowers ready to bloom.

Summer or front view. The front side, given to Leto, is filled with an abundance of leaves and flowers.

Autumn or side view. 4 the side is Autumn with fruits.

Day or top view.

Night or inside view.

It should be said that the chest was carved entirely by hand, without the use of new technologies for carving, which determines its value.
Richly decorated, where not only the back wall is cut out, but also the inner side of the lid, which, in terms of the complexity of the carving, is ahead of all possible options for such a chest.
And the drawer-attachment adds even more functionality and convenience, since storage can be divided into categories.
Since ancient times, a chest is a symbol of wealth, prosperity, dowry and valuable items were kept in it, people sat on it and even slept on it at the proper size.
