Review of the game spider man edge time. Review of Spider-Man: Edge of Time

It can already be considered a bitter tradition that successful series from well-known teams perish under the merciless pressure of the publisher and the tight deadlines for development. The Transformers were the first to fall, now it's Spider-Man's time. Beenox's Spider-man: Edge of Time is nothing like last year's best-selling Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions. And it's not just that of the four game characters there are only two left, and not in the abandonment of several battle modes, and not even in the additional competitions that have noticeably impoverished on ideas. It's all about the attitude towards the player, who is offered eight hours of monotonous action in the scenery of the comic book of the same name.

As the main course, Spider-man: Edge of Time offers an evil genius from 2099, who moved to 1975, created the sinister corporation Alchemax, built the gates of time and changed the future. The original spider Peter Parker and his heir from 2099 Miguel O "Jara are fighting the consequences of the new reality. They fight so successfully that the future and the past are constantly intertwined, the heroes change places and even save each other's girlfriends. All this leapfrog with changing the future under the pressure of the present only the first couple of hours are interesting, then everything slides into platitudes and the only thing that keeps you from the screen is rare sparks of humor and a desire to know how it all ends.

As noted above, Spider-man: Edge of Time, abandoned tactical missions, noir, and with them memorable battles with famous villains. Local bosses are smallish, stupid and prefer to die only after a prolonged third phase of the same type of fight. Particularly annoying is the save system, which, in the event of the death of a hero, offers to start a boring fight not from the passed phase, but from the very beginning. In some cases, you have to repeat the same stage several times due to unsuccessful camera angles or sudden death from the blade passing through the cover. Dividing boss fights into phases implies another scourge modern games- QTEs that pop up towards the end of the battle, with dire results. If bosses shine with their dullness, then ordinary opponents prefer reasonable tactics - zombie attacks, from which two main abilities of the time masters save: fast movement in space (spider instinct) and a temporary explosion that freezes all enemies in space and time. The latter requires a long recharge.

In Spider-man: Edge of Time, as in the previous part of the series, there is its own pumping system, which divides all abilities into individual and general ones, and also uses different sources of energy to improve them. For special ones (health, endurance, strength), you need yellow spiders, which are hidden in caches at the level or are given as a bonus for especially successful battles. For the blues, the balls of light scattered all over the place will do. Large blue and red balls restore health and stamina gauge. Spider-Man's moves range from a web hammer to an air strike, but a simple button mesh tactic remains the most effective.

From time to time between battles, the player is offered mini-levels with a high-speed flight down into ventilation systems of hundreds of gates, jumpers and pipes. This is most similar to the flight of Kratos in God of War 3. After the tenth time, the accelerated levels are very annoying. It only intensifies along with impenetrable cutscenes, which are followed by the dumbest time-based tasks with zero navigation through a destructible building and completely wild camera angles. Moreover, the game is so designed for loyal fans of the universe that half of the references, motives and decisions of the heroes remain behind the scenes.

The challenge system is not worthy of mention. You also complete various tasks (destroy enemies for set time or collect a certain number of balls), receiving gold, silver or bronze medals. Some of the tasks are practically impracticable due to crawling out at the wrong time of screensavers, unsuccessful camera angles, or simply unresponsive controls.

Spider-man: Edge of Time is a statistically average licensed project that you wouldn't expect from the creators of last year's Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions. An interesting scenario idea and rudiments of humor are dying under the onslaught of monotonous gameplay, boring bosses, repetitive actions for a while, stupid opponents, a terrible camera and one of the most unsuccessful autosave systems. And this dullness is not saved even by jokes about sex and the magnificent Val Kilmer as the main villain.

The version for Xbox 360

Last year turned out to be a very decent game, not only compared to the previous mediocre parts of the series, but in general as a third-person action game about a superhero. The developers later decided to limit the number of measurements. Spiderman two, instead of four, as a result, this year was born Spider-Man: Edge of Time... Whether this was good for the game and whether it is worth any attention at all, you will learn from full review from site.

Genre: Action

Developer: Beenox

Platform: Xbox 360

Probably, there are no more people who have not heard about the adventures of Peter Parker. Perhaps many have not watched the Hollywood trilogy, have not read the comics of this universe, and even more so have not played a dozen toys for various platforms. But it would be very strange not to hear about such an unusual superhero in the 21st century. Therefore, we will not go into the plots of previous films and games. It will focus exclusively on Spider-Man: Edge of Time, in which all the attention of the authors is focused on two parallel worlds.

The essence of the story is that a villain from the future in the present kills the Spider, which makes this very future very dark. Therefore, now the task of the "dead" Peter Parker is to prevent his death, fighting the villains in two dimensions at once. Well, downright quoting (or just copying) the plot Terminator! True, the authors of the game tried to be original. Spider-Man appears here in two versions: in 2009 (that is, from the past), who rushes to the aid of his future counterpart, who gets it from the overwhelming forces of Evil. And the mechanics of the game have not changed at all.

The hero again uses his remarkable acrobatic abilities, runs on various surfaces, shoots cobwebs and painfully fights with his fists and legs. But this is only in theory and in the screenshots. Studio Beenox in fact, managed to screw up last year's blockbuster, which in 2010 made it possible to play as four different Spiders in different locations. There were no problems with the variety. And here Spider-man the sample of 2011 works exactly the opposite. Of course, Peter Parker and his obscure heir from 2099 named Miguel O "Jara are of some interest as characters.

And they fight the evil genius in such a way that the future and the past are constantly intertwined, and new partners help and rescue each other as much as they can from the heap of alterations. At the same time, they try to constantly joke. Still, cartoons and comics about Spiderman were famous not only for Peter Parker, but also for excellent doses of funny situations in the best traditions of Hollywood. In general, this is the only thing that remains for them after two hours that the players will spend in the virtual world of the new Spider-Man: Edge of Time... Under the knife went tasks in which it was necessary to apply some ingenuity and even tactics. Interesting levels somehow diminished, the atmosphere also evaporated.

Fighting is interesting at first, but the mood spoils as soon as deadly bosses enter the stage, and you can hardly defeat them! True, only if you are willing to endure repetitive runs that require performing the same techniques. Well, by the middle of the campaign, they are able to really start to piss off themselves, because they cannot boast of original capabilities or at least interesting appearance... The developers have not forgotten the system for developing the abilities of the protagonist, for which different sources of energy are used. Balls and spiders scattered across the levels, wherever possible, will help you!

The leveling is not very interesting, but thanks at least for the illusion of choice. After all, all the same, the most effective is the invocation of enemies, but a spectacular technique with a huge hammer made of cobwebs that has not gone anywhere. Unfortunately, nothing new Beenox seems to have tried to come up with. There are funny mini-games, they are also interactive scenes, where you need to quickly respond to obstacles on the way and the like, but due to the ease of the tasks, they do not captivate, do not make you nervous! By the way, about the production. It is generally not bad, but very often it happens that because of a drunken camera you cannot see anything, there is continuous flickering around, and at such moments the Spider is very often in danger of certain death.

And to die from the fact that the camera or game physics is buggy, you see, it's a shame. Therefore, from the very beginning, prepare for the fact that this will happen throughout the entire game. The in-game videos are boring, the direction is very mediocre, if we talk about the action from the 3rd person based on Spiderman... The controls are also quite controversial, it is a little slow, so it is very difficult to dodge the blows of nimble opponents, and it seems that you will get tired of hitting in slow-mo very quickly. At one time, this was observed in action "The Matrix: Neo's Way".

There were tons of interesting combos and references to scenes from the trilogy, but the graphics and terrible controls ruined the whole experience. New Spider-Man: Edge of Time visually, of course, it looks much nicer, but in terms of combat, everything is rather poor. However, if you do not find fault with much and do not compare with last year, a very successful game under a film license, the new "Spider" you can see certain advantages. Still, the games with time for actually children's arcade action are well furnished. Spider has a lot of interesting attacks, there are test modes, you can fight for a very long time.

Fans of such uncomplicated staged fighting games may like it. Spider-Man: Edge of Time Is a statistically average project under license, which you would not expect from the creators of last year Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions... The development of an interesting idea from the previous part was killed by the monotonous gameplay and not the most sane control system. But here there is Val Kilmer himself, great performing the main villain! On the face of a classic B-class project. And so far it has appeared only on the Xbox 360. Well, maybe it's just for the best. release date Spider-Man: Edge of Time- October 4, 2011

The version for Xbox 360

Spider-Man: Edge of Time... A game that was made in a very short time. A game that was made by a small development team that came out of Beenox... The game in which our The amazing Spider Man ... Doesn't play a major role. No wonder she was so controversially rated, right? Well, mostly negative. This is understandable. But first things first.

This is not an overview according to the standard scheme of parsing each component of the game separately, because in relation to this game, this cannot be done. In short, I would rate it something like this: the script is 9 out of 10, because this is practically the main advantage of the game, the plot is really interesting and the dialogues are sometimes simply divine. The gameplay is for a solid eight, but more about it will be below. The music is 7-7.5, because in general it fits well with the atmosphere and the main theme is excellent, but you will hardly want to listen to something from the soundtrack separately. It should be noted the gorgeous play of the voice actors. But then the problems begin, because it is not clear how to evaluate everything else.

That is, look: our entire game takes place in a confined space of laboratories. And they are as diverse as laboratories can be. There is a very beautiful location with gardens, there is this large room with a portal, where the battle with Anti-Venom and not only, there are a few more interesting places, but in general it is almost 100% a game consisting of LABORATORIES. Well, how can one evaluate, for example, the design of local "landscapes"? It can be seen that the developers squeezed everything they could out of them, but the locations are still not very diverse.

Another problem with the game is script. "But wait, wait, it says above that the script is good?" Yes, he is good, even quite. In 2099, an evil scientist from an evil megacorporation Alchemax by the name Walker Sloane travels into the past, founds Alchemax much earlier, because of this, both the past and the future change (dystopia!), and Spider-Man in our time dies at the hands of Anti-Venom. Spider-Man from 2099 does not like this situation and he goes to the past to fix everything and prevent death. Peter Parker... As a result, the Spiders unite in front of a common threat and set off on a great adventure in time and space.

In general, the topic is perfectly covered. The only problem is that the script seemed to be written not for the game. It could be used to make an excellent one and a half hour cartoon or film. Here, for the game, in any case, it would be necessary to "stretch the pleasure". And the developers understood this, because in the first half of the game everything goes quite cheerfully, but a little further the game begins to crush with monotony and no less monotonous enemies, because the small team did not have a large budget or time, and it was necessary to fill the game with something ... thanks Activision, as always.

For the same reason, there are few bosses in the game. The final double boss battle smooths out the unpleasant impression of this, but the residue still remains. And in the script, as mentioned earlier, some may not like the fact that Parker is not here. the main character... Seriously, almost everything that matters in this game does Miguel - Spider-Man 2099... He defeats Anti-Venom and saves Parker, he constantly advises Peter what to do and he prevents the time change by defeating the final boss - CEO Alchemax(the plot twist associated with it may also be disliked by many for approximately the same reason). One might have guessed, considering that the scriptwriter of the game, Peter David- creator of Spider-Man 2099.

As for the gameplay, it hasn't changed much since the Shattered dimensions(hereinafter referred to as SD). Almost the same high-quality chopper at high speed with slasher-like swings. Those who liked the gameplay in SD, and I am one of those, will like it here too. The SD combat system featured fast light attacks, slow heavy attacks, grapple / webs, and jump. In a word, everything is pretty standard, but the performance is excellent. In addition, the SD also included " spider stance"which was responsible for several things: auto-aiming at enemies, dodging attacks and various traps and ... It just looked cool.

Here combat system changed quite a bit. For example: heavy attacks, if you are not too close to the enemy, have become a kind of "tackle attack" (the Spider either jumps up to the enemy and hits, like 2099, or hits it with a huge spider's hammer, like Amazing), and also gave several new combinations, but the main innovation in it can be considered the replacement of the spider stance from SD for an individual ability for each Spider. Have Awesome It " accelerated reflexes"thanks to which he dodges all enemy attacks and passes through lasers, that is, a partial analogue of the stance from SD. 2099 has -" bait". He creates his copy, which is attacked by all enemies, without noticing himself. This ability is more useful, and in a fight with Anti-Venom is generally vital. Also, when the scale in the form of a spider is filled, you can activate Time paradox- all enemies freeze in place.

Moved from SD here and " web of fate"- a system of tests, for the passage of which they give points that can be spent on the purchase of pumping and costumes. But even here, not everything remained untouched: if in SD, with its level system, passing tests were right during the game, then in Edge of Time they were taken out separately and they are launched from the main menu.Otherwise, the structure remains the same - if in SD the web was divided into "grids" by levels, then here it is divided into them according to game acts, and for meeting certain conditions, they are still evaluated for medals from bronze to It was definitely a bad decision to endure challenges in the menu, as going through them separately from the main game is simply boring. Symbiote or Ben Reilly... With their opening here, too, everything is a little more complicated: if in SD you just had to collect a certain number of points, then here you need to buy them for keys. One key, one suit. Keys are awarded for completing one of the test grids for silver or higher.

The pumping remained almost one to one. You buy new combinations and all sorts of improvements like increased impact power or health scale. There are three submenus in the upgrade menu: pumping Amazing Spider, pumping 2099 and pumping what goes for both of them.

As for the frequent claims of abuse " free fall"Spidey 2099 has a lot of them, yes, but not so that right over the edge. Here they themselves are slightly different in comparison with SD. If in it most often it was necessary to reach the enemy, then here it turns into sophisticated with obstacles. "In the end, especially when you have to fly fast all the time, because everything explodes behind you, and a bunch of all kinds of rods, walls, incomprehensible structures with one small slot that you can fly into are constantly coming out in front of you ... If you have time.

So it turns out that the reason for the failure of the game is pretty obvious. And this reason is Activision. Having limited in time and money to a small group of developers, they had no choice but to make sure that at least fans could enjoy this game. An ordinary man in the street after the middle of the game can get bored sharply, and there is nothing special to attract him with. For fans, on the other hand, there is everything here: interesting story, constant references to comics, good humor for those who are in the subject, a lot of interesting dialogues from Spiders, a whole bunch of alternative costumes (if you add everything at all, then this is probably even more than in games with PSOne). And if you also love the Spider-Man 2099 and are ready to endure the repetitive gameplay because of the above advantages, then you should definitely at least try to play it. This game is, for the most part, his benefit performance.

It is impossible to recommend the game to everyone else. If you have a positive attitude towards Spider-Man, then you might like it. If you are indifferent to him, then you shouldn't even try - it's better to play Shattered Dimensions. I will refrain from evaluating, but I will note that I love Spider-Man, including 2099, and enjoyed the game a lot. And this pleasure could have been received by the majority of those who played, because the game had great potential. But it just so happened that now, thanks to Activision, one can only fantasize about this topic ...

Last year's "Spider-Man" Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, turned out to be a game not outstanding, but, at least, decent - which, given the hero's bad video game pedigree, can be safely counted as an achievement.

Shattered dimensions was notable for the fact that its action took place in parallel in four universes at once - the Spider-Man ordinary, the Spider-Man from the alternative reality, the Spider-Man from the future and the Spider-Man from the past. Each of the game universes had its own graphic style, and the Spiders found in them had their own set of techniques and skills, which allowed the authors to make loud statements about “four games in one”. It turned out brightly, but rather superficially, so in the sequel, Edge of time, it was decided to reduce the degree of ambition and concentrate efforts on only two universes - "ordinary" and "future". The connection between the two worlds-times is direct: a villain from the future invades the present and kills the Spider, which changes it - for the worse, of course, this is the future itself.

Now the futuristic Spider (flying, with wings) must be sure to save its predecessor. What is this game? Although its creators, Beenox, deny the title of "sequel", it is obviously about what it was about Shattered dimensions-About spider acrobatics, fights in the style of "win-them-all" with dozens of identical opponents, rapid flights - and even outwardly, both projects are almost indistinguishable. You will need to play for both one and the other incarnation of the Spider - and the actions performed by one hero will affect the life of the second, and vice versa. It looks something like this: while the Spiderman of the future in his time is fighting an unequal battle with the superior forces of mechanical monsters, the Spider from the past must manage to get into the same location, but in his own time, and destroy the prototypes of these robots. Then in the future they will disappear, which will greatly facilitate the fate of the 2099 version of the Spider.

Both Spidermen predictably know how to climb walls (although one of them does not seem to need this ability), shoot cobwebs and make signature combos, and also anticipate danger with their spider instincts and communicate with each other telepathically through time and space. If that sounds intriguing enough to you, then Edge of Time is definitely worth the wait.
