The Atlas is intended for motorists as a guide to the roads of the USSR.
Administrative divisions are given for September 1986.
The Atlas is intended for motorists as a guide to the roads of the Soviet Union. It includes the territory of the USSR, where there are highways, therefore, some ASSR, territories and regions are not fully shown on maps.
All maps are oriented north.
The maps are arranged by republics, starting with the largest - the RSFSR and further in the order of the republics in the USSR in the direction from north to south and from west to east. As part of the republics, the maps are arranged by administrative units, also according to the above order.
Separate territories (Khorezm region, northeastern part of Tashauz region, region of Caucasian Mineral Waters) are shown in the form of insets.
The road network on the maps is shown with a subdivision into roads of national importance (trunk and other), republican importance and others. On the roads of national importance, their numbers are indicated. Complete road information according to conventional signs fits within the administrative divisions listed in the map titles. For the continuation of roads outside the main area, see the pages with numbers in green.
On highways, areas with a hard surface and unpaved areas are identified, the coverage of roads on the adjacent territory is not shown.
Distances between kilometer signs, as a rule, are indicated between the centers of settlements, except for Moscow, Leningrad, where they are indicated to the city territory, and in Kharkov along M2 and M19 - to the bypass road. Travel through these cities is not included in the total distances between major cities.
Distances between major cities on the maps are given mainly along the roads of national or republican significance.
In distance tables, kilometer distances between major cities are indicated by bypassing transit cities.
On the main territory, car service points are shown: gas stations, service stations with the allocation of service centers and service stations of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant.
On schematic city plans yellow the main thoroughfares in the city are highlighted.
At the end of the atlas there is an index of settlements.

The Atlas is intended for motorists who need a guide to the roads of the Soviet Union. Atlas maps cover that part of the territory of the USSR where there are highways; therefore, individual republics, territories and regions are not fully shown on the maps.
    Map scales: 1: 1,600,000 (in 1 cm 16 km), 1: 1,750,000 (in 1 cm 17.5 km), 1: 2,500,000 (in 1 cm 25 km), 1: 3,000,000 (in 1 cm 30 km), 1: 4,000,000 (in 1 cm 40 km).
The union republic is taken as a separate mapped unit. The territory of the RSFSR, the largest republic, is divided into three regions. The republics and regions of the RSFSR, significant in area, which occupy several pages of the atlas, are divided into rectangles (pages and spreads). The strip of overlap between the maps of each section is, as a rule, 1 cm and is limited by a blue dashed line. The overlap bar is not shown outside of its section or region. Each map has an arrow pointing north.
The “Map of the Atlas Sections” (pp. VI-VII) indicates the locations of the union republics or regions in the atlas. Each section is preceded by a map layout, where the pages of the atlas are indicated.
To determine on which pages the map of a particular republic, territory or region is placed, you need to refer to the index of political-administrative and administrative-territorial units (page X).
Information about the location of the settlement is given by the index of the names of the settlements, placed at the end of the atlas.
On the maps of the atlas, motor roads are divided into 4 groups: national, republican, regional and other roads (see page "Legend").
To find the road interrupted by the frame of the map, you should refer to the page, the number of which is indicated in the blue arrow located near the frame. If the continuation of the road is outside the section and the directional arrow
no, you need to refer to the "Atlas Sections Layout Scheme" and determine on which pages the adjacent section is located.
Near settlements and at crossroads, kilometer signs are given and the distances between them are indicated in kilometers * (red numbers between red signs). The total mileage is indicated between major cities (blue numbers between blue signs). Distances between large settlements are also given in the tables on pages VIII-IX.
In each section of the atlas, service points for motorists: petrol stations, car service stations, hotels, auto turbases and campings, tourist bases with campgrounds are shown only within the corresponding administrative-territorial unit, and on page XI there is a list of CAC (specialized auto centers) and STOA (stations maintenance of cars) Volzhsky Automobile Plant.
The schematic plans of the most important cities (pages 1-9) show the main thoroughfares, service points and their addresses. The Moscow map also shows the exits on the Moscow Ring Road and the distance from Red Square to it in meters.
The atlas on pages 127-128 contains road signs.
