We recently took stock of the previous year for GTA Online, highlighting the best moments like the release of The Doomsday Heist or the closure of some hacking programs. Now, as promised, we will take a look at the less joyful pages of 2017.

Fortunately, this list will be shorter, as in 2017 the GTA was generally on top and had few problems. The previous one was much more complicated due to problems with hackers and the destruction of counterfeit money.

2017 was a very successful year for GTA

Even so, there have been a couple of unpleasant events over the past 12 months. What caused the excitement this time?

The controversial situation aroundOpenIV

GTA 5 had serious problems with mods. Although Rockstar has officially stated that they are not against mods made for single player if they don't affect online. Plus, the game has a huge modding community. However, their status has always remained unclear.

Due to the fact that the term has been regularly misused, online mods and modders have come to be considered hacks and hackers, although there is a huge difference between the two.

As a result of numerous attempts by developers to fight hackers, modders also suffered along the way. Since many of the hacks were based on the same techniques and manipulations as mods, patches aimed at "healing" online often made mods unplayable in singleplayer.

Rockstar has officially stated that they are not opposed to mods made for single player games, as long as they are not online.

It's good that these changes were always rolled back in such cases.

The situation was unstable, but large modification projects still existed. Moreover, almost all authors used the popular OpenIV program for this. As the name implies, it was originally created back in the days of GTA 4 and was later updated to work with the fifth part.

With such a solid history of use, it has been the most popular modding utility in the community. So when the OpenIV team received the dissolution order from Take-Two's lawyers, it was a blow.

This was followed by a huge response from the fans. GTA 5 was inundated with negative reviews on Steam, and then a petition arose calling for the rescue of OpenIV. In the end, the protests took effect and OpenIV was updated again. She still works.

The story ended well, but it was still one of the nasty pages for GTA in 2017.

Closing the character transfer service

In 2017, among other things, the last nail was hammered into the coffin of GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360. It was on these platforms that GTA 5 first came out, and where GTA Online was released. But alas, over time, the game has moved to more modern platforms like current generation consoles and PCs. It became obvious that the older versions would have to leave.

For legacy consoles, DLC support ended much earlier. However, players could still port their characters to new platforms.

Rockstar has completely disabled character transfer to close loopholes for hackers

This allowed those who had upgraded to the so-called "Enhanced Edition" to keep their progress in the game. There was no need to start over. Unfortunately, this feature has also become a loophole for hackers. The consoles of the current generation have not yet been hacked, but the old ones have been filled with cheaters. One of the popular methods was to take a character from old version, use hacks to accrue huge amounts of money and then transfer it to a new one.

In 2017, Rockstar completely turned off the ability to transfer the character in order to step into the future, and get rid of this annoying gap in the game's defense. Many of the users of older versions considered this decision dishonest. However, the maintenance of a help desk for the old architecture was no doubt expensive. In the end, it just brought more problems than the benefits.

... And, in general, these are all the failures of 2017. Fortunately, the past year will definitely be remembered with joy thanks to a huge number DLC. Misunderstandings will be forgotten. There were two of them, one was finally sorted out, and the other was inevitable. Hopefully 2018 will be at least as cool, and maybe even better!
