Ps4 slim sizes. How PS4 differs from PS4 PRO and SLIM. PS4 Pro has an additional USB output

From Sony, introduced in September and commercially available towards the end of 2016.

From the name of the console, you can already guess that it has become thinner than its predecessor, and as a result, lighter. The PlayStation 4 Slim was indeed expected, with Sony announcing Slim versions of all of its gaming platforms some time after the release of the first version.

The prefix has turned out to be quite compact, stylish, which allows it to fit neatly into various designs.

The body of the set-top box is completely made of matte plastic, this can be attributed to the merits, since glossy cases are usually spotted with scratches after the second or third dust wiping, not counting the numerous blunders.

The PlayStation 4 Slim's power and disc feed buttons have become mechanical. This innovation prevented disc ejections and the removal / introduction of the console into sleep mode when wiping dust from the console or accidentally touching it. In general, Sony took into account the wishes of users previous version PlayStation 4.

The cooling system of the Playstation 4 has been refined and improved. In the Slim version, it has become more efficient in coping with the overheating of the console, and the most pleasant thing, oddly enough, it has become quieter, much quieter.

But many owners of Sound-systems were skeptical about this model. The set-top box lacks an optical output through which owners of home theaters and music systems connect the previous model to their amplifiers for more fine tuning outgoing sound.
The sound from Playstation 4 Slim is first fed through an HDMI cable directly to the TV, and from it is already outputted to the amplifier / sound system.

The game console has acquired HDR technology, which allows you to display the maximum number of color shades, which increases the color gamut, and the colors and tones themselves acquire deeper shades. Also, with this technology, more adaptive light correction in games is noted.

These features allow you to feel game process more realistic.

  • Consumes less energy
  • Quieter than the original Playstation 4
  • The buttons on the console itself have become mechanical
  • The console has lost sound output through the optics (the only drawback)

Verdict.

The Playstation 4 Slim is quieter, uses less power and takes up less space. In addition, it has more modern standards of communication with the world. True, it should be noted that 90% of gamers will not feel the difference between HDMI 1.4 and 2.0a, just as they will not notice that the console now supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi at 5 GHz. Not many people use the optical audio output either. The significant differences remain noise, dimensions and power consumption.

Should you upgrade from playstation 4 to playstation 4 slim? Definitely not worth it. The difference in noise and dimensions is not significant enough to make an update. And if there is space in the room and a stand for the vertical position of the console, all the difference comes to naught. The only thing is power consumption, if you play a lot, then when you upgrade to slim, you will save on electricity.

Thus, we have before us an improved version of playstation 4, which can be recommended to those who do not have a regular playstation 4. However, on condition that you buy the console to play a match in FIFA once or twice a week or to diversify the evening with friends. Everyone else who is engaged in more serious gaming should take a closer look at the older brother - the playstation 4 pro, which we already have on our website comparing it with the ps4 slim - a comparison between ps4 slim and ps4 pro.

Thank you so much for your attention to the article. Unfortunately, the block for comments is not ready yet. Therefore, if you have any questions, then leave them under a similar video on my YouTube channel. I will be glad to answer all your questions.

Two consoles, two prices

The key intrigue of the evening on September 7 - whether the Japanese will show the updated hardware - ended in the victory of those who, a few months ago, firmly believed in conspiracy theories. They, we recall, predicted the division of brand users into two categories: those who will remain with the classic PS4 (or its Slim version), and those who are in pursuit of technological novelty and take the NEO version of the system. PlayStation Meeting 2016 dot the i's.

First, Sony is really preparing for official the start of the significantly thinner PlayStation 4. It is scheduled for September 15 and will provide gamers with the opportunity to see firsthand how right those video bloggers were who had already purchased the "gray" version of the novelty. In short: yes, the console no longer has touch buttons, it is cheaper (MSRP $ 299, in Russia 26,999 rubles), and it lacks an optical audio output.

Much more interesting is the situation with the PlayStation 4 Pro - the very NEO version, rumors about which did not leave the editorials of the world media for several months in a row. According to Mark Cerny (renowned PS4 developer and chief ideologist. - Approx. Life), Sony is in no way going to destroy the console that everyone is familiar with, but wants to provide technologists with the opportunity to get acquainted with their favorite video games in maximum resolution.

However, not everything is so simple. Pro PS4 is onlysupports image output in Ultra HD. The decision to use it still remains with the developers. If they want, 4K and HDR lighting will appear in the project. If not, then all that is left for gamers is to be content with the standard 1080p / 60fps combination.

  • launch in 4K, but with the optimal fps and graphics quality for this resolution;
  • classic 1080p with floating FPS ranging from 45 to 60 frames per second;
  • Highest possible picture quality combined with 30 frames per second and 1080p resolution.

The example of Lara Croft is very clear that Sony has invited developers to implement performance tuning in their products. Ten years ago, this was considered an unprecedented audacity by console standards.

Further more. With existing games, the situation is even more unclear. It is already known that some exclusives will be patched in order to meet the "high" quality standards set by the Pro console. At the time of this writing, at least one super hit has appeared on this list - "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End". Of the games that have not yet been released, support for all the "buns" of the system is declared in Mass effect: Andromeda, Call of Duty: Infinite warfare and also in the zombie epic Days Gone.

As noted by a number of sources, this situation became possible for two reasons. First, Sony has exponentially abandoned PS4 exclusives. Pro games... Secondly, due to the lack of a technological leap as such. PS4 Pro differs from the regular version of the console by an exceptionally more powerful GPU and an accelerated central one. Otherwise, the average user is unlikely to find any significant difference between the two devices. Except, of course, a strange move on the part of Sony: unlike the PS4 Slim, the box with the signature Pro has an optical audio output, but cannot play 4K movies on Blu-Ray media. Why? ... At least the price is good: $ 399. Exactly the same amount as asked for the PS4 at the start. In Russia, however, a considerable 34,999 rubles will be asked for the console.

An interesting detail: despite the fact that at PS Meeting 2016 they talked primarily about Slim and Pro versions, not so long ago it became known that what u regular PS4 will not be left without HDR support ... The corresponding technology will be added with a new firmware, which, according to preliminary data, should appear next week.

Accessories

Not without an updated line of peripherals. In addition to the externally changed PS-camera, at least two amusing devices were presented on the stage of the conference.

The new version of the iconic controller has received another LED. Located on the touch panel, it, as conceived by the authors, should help gamers more accurately track the health indicators of the character. Glows green - everything is fine. Blazed red - Someone is heading to the Game Over screen soon.

The branded wireless stereo headset boasts support for Sony 3D Audio technology and 7.1 audio. For reference, this is one of the cheapest ways to get quality headphones for your favorite console.

Games

However, the price of any console is worthless if there are no interesting video games on it. On the stage of the PlayStation Meeting 2016, a lot of remarkable projects were shown that can interest the widest audience. All in 4K.

Mass Effect andromeda

Electronic Arts has brought a gameplay demo of the highly anticipated action RPG set in the Bioware universe to New York.

Horizon zero dawn

Few were surprised that Sony chose to showcase the power of the PS4 Pro with an example of an exclusive from its in-house studio. It looks just great. Released on March 1, 2017.

Rise of the tomb Raider

The once-new adventures of the forever young Lara Croft were considered one of the main trump cards up the sleeve of Microsoft. Those days are over. Rise of the Tomb raider not just moving to PS4 Pro, but also getting Ultra HD support. What is not a reason for joy?

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

The series from Activision has long been notorious among gamers, which, however, does not prevent the publisher from selling millions of discs every year. Infinite Warfare will almost certainly face the same fate. Well, support for PS4 Pro, of course.

Instead of an afterword

After PlayStation Meeting 2016, it became clear that the classic console industry had come to an end. Sony and Microsoft have erased the boundaries of generations and offered gamers a system within which the device can receive several intermediate versions. Is it good? Only time will tell.

Game consoles provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in an exciting gameplay with high-quality graphics and sound. Sony playstation and Xbox are dividing the gaming market and becoming the subject of constant controversy among users. We understood the advantages and disadvantages of these consoles in our previous material. Here we will tell you how the regular PS4 differs from the Pro and Slim versions.

How PS4 differs from Pro and Slim versions

The original PS4 console is the eighth generation console, the start of its sales fell on 2013. The elegant and powerful console immediately won the hearts of buyers with its power, thanks to which it became possible to play games in 1080p quality. It was distinguished from the set-top box of the previous generation by significantly increased performance, good graphic performance, thanks to which the picture became even clearer, and the graphics detail increased.

Three years later, an updated version of the console called PS4 Slim was released. Its difference from the original is already noticeable in its appearance - the console is much thinner than its predecessor, moreover, its design has changed. The technical characteristics have also changed: the updated and "thinner" version of the set-top box has an HDMI connector, new standard Bluetooth and the ability to pick up Wi-Fi at 5 GHz.

The PS4 Pro also keeps up with the original model in terms of performance and graphics. It differs in more power due to better overclocking of the video card. Also, minor bugs and system errors were removed, the console began to work more smoothly and quickly.

Video: review of three versions of PS4

Check out the top 5 best-selling PS4 games:.

So which of these three consoles should you choose? If you like speed and reliability, and you don't have to worry about saving space, then feel free to choose the original PS4. If the priority is the compactness and lightness of the set-top box, as well as the almost complete absence of noise during operation and energy savings, then you should opt for the PS4 Slim. And if you are used to using advanced functionality, maximum performance and compatibility with a 4K TV, support for HDR technology and many other improvements are important for you, then the most "feature-rich" PS4 Pro is ideal for you. Whichever of these consoles you choose, it will in any case be extremely successful.

The future has arrived: electric cars drive on the roads, you can pay for Rollton using an iPhone, and entertainment takes place in a different reality. After a series of transfers, all three helmets (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR) are finally on the market. People who were waiting for a miracle were faced with a cruel truth: virtual reality is not nearly as good as imagination drew.

Wanting to get out of our reality with its volatile exchange rates and cheap oil as soon as possible, we set about unpacking PlayStation VR. If you look at the presentation photos, and then at the contents of the box, you will notice striking differences: in the advertising images there are either no wires at all, or they are carefully hidden. But the cables are still there. And you can't even imagine how many there really are.

As you take all the bells and whistles out of the box, there are more and more cables. One HDMI, the second, microUSB, then a long cable, this time double. And at the bottom the helmet itself is at last - you will not believe it, also with a cord. There's also a large hardware box with an external power supply. Also, do not forget about the branded PlayStation Camera, which must be purchased separately (120 rubles). It is naturally wired.

Your room will resemble a sysadmin's closet: twisted cables everywhere, which are so easy to get caught in your feet. If you are allergic to wires or a beautiful interior, don't even think about PlayStation VR: the cords are everywhere, there is nowhere to hide them.

The module through which the wires are connected

Connection is elementary. Firstly, the cables are numbered, and secondly, there are clear instructions. The helmet does not connect directly to the PlayStation 4, but to a separate module that transmits the signal to the TV. Thus, others see the same as you. It is to the block that so many wires go.

The helmet looks cosmic. That and the musicians from Daft Punk would probably wear it. The design seems rather flimsy: the front is attached to the rim in only one movable place, and when adjusted, the plastic crunches dangerously. You can play without taking off your glasses: there is enough space for them. But the PlayStation VR needs to fit snugly to the face, and the lenses sometimes press on the glasses of the glasses - from this, marks quickly appear on the nose.

In general, the device fits well on different heads, although one problem was found. When looking down, a strip of light is visible - no matter how he adjusted and tightened the helmet, it was not possible to completely close the view. Other people did not find such a defect (it is necessary to eat off the cheeks, then). But during the game it does not interfere at all. The helmet needs to be adjusted as accurately as possible. Blurring of the picture and "fog" appear precisely because of the incorrect fit of the device on the head.

The first time you launch PlayStation VR, it surprises and disappoints at the same time. It surprises that here it is - the future. The helmet is not available in some test labs or at presentation exhibitions, virtual reality is now a technology for home use. Objects and environments in VR really look three-dimensional - they feel like they can be touched. In the Driveclub race, bending over, you seem to put your chin on the steering wheel, and in the rail horror Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, you always want to look behind your back: you never know who will sneak up there. The effect of presence is not one hundred percent, but it is very strong.

The football arcade Headmaster is interestingly done. Flying balls need to be hammered with the head, gaining points for hitting the marks. The helmet is light, the neck does not get tired from movements, but the force of the blow is not felt. For some games - for example, the office worker simulator Job Simulator and Until Dawn - it is advisable to acquire PlayStation Move controllers (approximately 80 rubles apiece, not included).

It's important to understand that the PlayStation VR, as well as the HTC Vive with the Oculus Rift, are the first mainstream devices of this kind and there are too many compromises. Remember the first smartphones: Android was shamelessly slowing down, the iPhone couldn't shoot video. With each new generation, gadgets have become more and more perfect. The same awaits for VR helmets, so you shouldn't give up on the technology itself in advance.

Specifically, the PlayStation VR claims are as follows.

First, the disgusting resolution (960 × 1920 per eye). The pixels are visible, and you don't need to look closely: the display is close to the eyes, the squares cannot be hidden.

Secondly, here, in addition to the resolution, the graphics in games are also terrible. A regular PlayStation 4 lacks power to produce a high-quality picture, and projects have not yet been adapted for PlayStation 4 Pro. On this moment no matter which console you play VR on.

Thirdly, the helmet greatly affects the well-being. Even if you calmly ride a roller coaster, do not get off the swing for hours, you can closed eyes ride circular rides, then in PlayStation VR you will most likely still get very sick in half an hour of playing. The speed of onset of unpleasant symptoms and their strength depend on the project: the more dynamic it is, the faster the signs of nausea appear.

It's easy to spend 30-40 minutes playing the Tumble VR puzzle, but after a couple of battles in EVE: Valkyrie or the tank action Battlezone, you want to immediately take off your helmet and breathe fresh air... Gradually, the body gets used to new sensations, allowing you to play a little longer.

Another major problem with helmets virtual reality, including PlayStation VR, are games. There are practically none. Driveclub race, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood shooting range, Here They Lie horror, a couple of arcades - all this is fun, but not worth the money. As well as there is no point in buying a helmet for such games. All you need to do is download the free demo pack to evaluate the capabilities of PlayStation VR.

How do you usually play games on a console? We returned home after work (training, meetings, dates), wanted to take a break - they turned on a shooter or racing and sat down for an hour and a half to two hours in front of a huge TV. This scenario won't work with PlayStation VR. Put on your helmet, look at the pixels, squint at the light tones that almost burn out the retina, and just in case, put a basin on your knees. Playing in virtual reality does not allow you to rest, it only puts more stress on the body, tired after a busy day.

Sony has released an interesting ride. For a week and a half, the device can captivate, but then you just want to sit in front of a regular TV and normally play or watch a movie. The revolution has not yet happened. I wonder what will happen to VR next and what applications of this technology will be found by the developers. Now the flight of imagination is broken by technical limitations: there are few interactive objects in games, a picture from the debut of the PlayStation 3, the gameplay is meager.

When problems with resolution, graphics, motion sickness, kilometers of wires and directly games are eliminated, then let's talk about a breakthrough in the entertainment industry. In the meantime, VR is akin to 5D cinemas: for the sake of curiosity, you can go to one in a shopping center, but no one buys this booth for their home. Let's assume the PlayStation VR headset is popular at the box office. It's worth trying out virtual reality. Buy - no. Especially for 1040-1050 rubles - this is how much a helmet costs in Belarus.

Evaluation Onliner.by

Fun for a few days. It will not seriously tighten, but will give fresh sensations. It is necessary to wait for the correction of key shortcomings, and this will take at least 2-3 years.

The PlayStation 4 Pro has arrived to the editorial office with PlayStation VR. One of the arguments in favor of consoles instead of gaming computers has collapsed: you can no longer buy a console and forget about the hardware upgrade for 6-7 years. Or is it possible?

Sony and Microsoft are well aware of the difficult situation they are in. On the one hand, the set-top boxes have barely reached the middle of the life cycle ( Xbox one and PlayStation 4 came out in late 2013). And almost immediately it became clear that they are, to put it mildly, "not cake" in terms of iron. Yes, you cannot directly compare the characteristics of computers and set-top boxes. It's like figuring out which is more powerful: a truck or a supercar. Capacities are comparable in horsepower, but the purpose will be completely different. However, one fact is beyond doubt: Neither the Xbox One nor the PlayStation 4 can play games in Full HD resolution at 60 frames per second, and this is a problem. The situation is especially depressing against the backdrop of the emergence of TVs and monitors with 4K-resolution.

Therefore, the Japanese and Americans decided to release more powerful versions of the consoles. With the condition that all games must run both on regular consoles and on their improved versions. Key benefits of the new systems are support for 4K, HDR and increased performance, which will increase the number of frames per second and make the graphics more beautiful. Microsoft will release the mysterious Project Scorpio by Christmas 2017, while Sony is in advance and is already selling the PlayStation 4 Pro.

During the presentation, many users did not like the updated console because of its appearance... The decision to "glue" one more panel is a little strange (there were jokes that the PS5 will be four-layer), but in reality the console looks quite nice. Sony cannot play enough with the power and disc eject buttons: in the original PlayStation 3 they were touch-sensitive, in Slim they were made common, in the PlayStation 4 they are again touch-sensitive, and in the PS4 Slim and Pro they are again physical.

The ports are standard: the back is HDMI, LAN, an interface for the PlayStation Camera, an optical output and an additional USB connector - now there are three of them. Sony again failed to resolve the USB issue. The front ports are recessed inward between the narrow halves of the console, and thick flash drives do not fit all the way. The power cable has become more massive. The connector - as for computer power supplies - you can immediately see that the set-top box is more powerful than the usual one and requires more power (310 W versus 165 W in the PS4 Slim).

The changes inside are much more serious. The processor was overclocked from 1.6 to 2.1 GHz, the graphics were also improved - 36 cores instead of 18. The frequency was raised from 800 to 911 MHz. Overall performance has more than doubled: from 1.84 teraflops to 4.2. Both Slim and Pro finally get support for 5GHz Wi-Fi routers.

It is planned that new games will immediately support additional features PS4 Pro. A number of already released projects received weighty patches that tighten the resolution and make improvements to the picture. It's possible to notice this on a Full HD TV, but sometimes you have to try.

The picture is more detailed in some places, although there are no fundamental differences. For example, the difference between original games with the PlayStation 3 and their remastered on PS4 is much more explicit. There's an updated GTA 5 that the Uncharted collection looks much better.

When you launch a game on PS4 Pro, you subconsciously expect the same technological leap. However, a fresh console is not a new generation, and this must be borne in mind. The PlayStation 4 Slim, the filling of which is identical to the "fatty", arrived in stores in September, and Sony is not abandoning the base set-top box. She, too, should bring money to the company.

The big picture difference between the PS4 Slim and the Pro is not particularly beneficial to the Japanese. So it's too early to write off the usual PS4. For a Full HD TV, the PlayStation 4 is sufficient, although the Pro brings its benefits. Some games will run at 60fps on Full HD screens. But with 4K came out a bummer. The resolution is supported, but this is not native 4K, but simply stretched from 1080p. It is not worth making a tragedy out of this. Ultra HD TVs will still look great on TVs, and true 4K is still too resource-intensive. At the same time, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End works in real 4K, but at 30 frames per second, or in stretched resolution with 60 fps.

Another important innovation is HDR technology, which allows you to squeeze out more detail from the dark areas of the picture. But this again requires a TV that supports this function. It is not vital, but the image actually becomes nicer - brighter and more detailed.

Should I buy a regular PlayStation 4 or a Pro? If you have a 4K TV, it is definitely worth taking a top-end set-top box: the console was created for this resolution in the first place. If there is no fancy screen, but you want a slightly improved picture and more frames per second, then the Pro looks more interesting again. If you already have a PlayStation 4, then you can do without the flagship system.

At least in the current games, there is no such significant difference. The shooter Battlefield 1 has changed the most; the differences between other projects are not so serious. With PlayStation + VR, a powerful console is almost essential. A regular PS4 is barely enough for virtual reality, and the Pro will be able to further unleash the potential of the technology.
