Improved balancer

The new balancer is a template algorithm that selects equal teams in the shortest possible time. First of all, the balancer tries to create a three-tiered combat using the 3/5/7 template. Expansion of branches of light tanks to Tier X

The branches of light tanks will be expanded to Tier X and will receive a standard battle level (± 2), which will diversify game process on LT and will make it nicer. They will no longer have to suffer: fast, but extremely "fragile" Tier VIII tanks will now play against "ten" tanks, but the number of Tier X tanks will not be significant - the "eighth" LTs will easily find opponents on the shoulder. However, that's not all! Having received full-fledged research branches, light tanks turned into independent combat units and received whole line balance edits. They will continue to play the role of scouts, but they will have decent firepower and excellent speed to influence the outcome of the battle when needed. The new Tier X light tanks will be faster and more maneuverable than their counterparts at lower tiers. Stabilization, maneuverability, armor penetration and damage allow light tanks to excel in combat at short and medium distances. In duels against CTs, Tier X light tanks are far from being whipping boys. Their guns will be only slightly inferior to those of medium tanks, and their armor penetration is enough to penetrate the side or stern of any enemy. Changes in the game mechanics of the SPG

New mechanics stun turns SPGs into long-range fire support vehicles: effective team players will be able to reduce combat performance enemy tanks enemy and set the direction of attack, staying behind the backs of allies. Having lost the ability to inflict high one-time damage, self-propelled guns will temporarily reduce the mobility, accuracy and reload speed of enemy vehicles. New music is dynamic: changes depending on game moment and displays emotions from what is happening on new level.

The team is arranged in such a way that all people are composers, they create music and at the same time make a huge layer of game sounds: explosions, sounds of a running engine, movement of tracks, shots. Update 1.0 means 1.5 years of continuous work by two composers and more than 80 thousand battles per department.

Two full-length albums have been written in a year and a half. By the standards of the music industry, this is more than fast. If you dismiss the fact that combat music is literally endless, and take 3 minutes from each composition, it turns out that more than 2.5 hours of musical material has been written for the update.

I had to listen to it 250 times a day, and it makes no sense to do it quietly, you need to hear all the power. When I left home, my colleagues did not even talk to me: they knew that I could no longer hear anything. "

The creation of a tank model begins with obtaining a technical assignment from historical consultants. Usually these are drawings, descriptions, a selection of photographs for each element of the car, which are enough to reproduce a 3D model. Sometimes find detailed information just impossible. In such cases, the team travels to the armored museum to scan a unique vehicle and get a dimensional model.

One of these tanks was the Strv-103b. After making sure that all the information they need is there, the graphic designers computer graphics begin to build the geometry of the tank. At this stage, it is important to observe many nuances: angles of inclination of armor plates, axis of rotation of vehicle components, number of bolts, gun depression angles, correct intersection of elements. After that comes the stage of elaboration of detailing. Everything that cannot be conveyed using geometry is transferred to bump maps (Normal Map). It can be chips, traces of a shell hit, milling - anything that will make the tank more unique and graphically rich. The process of creating a model is completed by the stage of applying materials. Designers use a previously created library of materials to determine where rubber, metal abrasions, paint, or spilled fuel will be. World Team of Tanks is constantly in search of new solutions, how to make each of the materials even more beautiful, and the tanks realistic. When the final view of the model is ready, it is sent to the game engine.

Mikhail Weiser, computer graphics designer: “In the Swedish museum, we took about 800 photos of the Strv-103b tank from all angles. When we processed the photos and built the 3D model, of course, it turned out to be so heavy that it could not be released into the game: no computers would have pulled it. Therefore, we made a lightweight game model, where at the same time fine detail remained, right down to the bolts ”.

New graphics in World of Tanks

First of all, World of Tanks programmers are tank players. And as players, they try to make tanks better: make them more realistic and make people feel like they are driving a real vehicle in a combat environment, and not on some toy plane in the toy world of tanks.

Three years ago, it became clear that it was impossible to improve this immersion with only new textures and models, and the content itself was very limited by technology - the old BigWorld engine. Therefore, the company decided to rework almost all aspects of the graphics engine: from the display of small pebbles to huge mountains, from small puddles to lakes, from small grass to dense forests.

In the new Core engine, great attention has been paid to details, especially the interaction of the player with the outside world: the grass sways from the shots, the tank gets wet when immersed in water, creates waves and leaves realistic traces. Lighting is based on the laws of nature: the update includes advanced sun glare. A mixture of all this gives a realistic perception of the picture.

The main point was not to change system requirements and keep performance the same: the new graphics are great, but what if the player doesn't have a very powerful machine? The work on the map begins in the level-design department. Level designers take a piece of the landscape and sketch out fields somewhere, somewhere forests, mark roads, paths and put up temporary houses with strokes.

The edge geometry is not gameplayable, it is a continuation of the picture in the non-playable zone. Now the tank can drive up to the edge of the map and look into the distance. "

Tank Museum and World of Tanks community

The World of Tanks tank museum contains things that people do with their own hands at WoT contests or simply send them to the Wargaming office: match tanks, tank boots, knitted tanks. With those who send packages, they always contact and offer to thank them, and it turns out that people do it just for their favorite game. This is a project health indicator that shows that creators are moving in the right direction. People get positive emotions from tanks and are ready to spend time to additionally create something for the game.

Wargaming conducts many offline activities for players and the development of patriotic themes. These are tournaments in 20 cities of the CIS, WG-fest and Tanker's Day in Minsk.

The update 1.0 involved a team of 41 people operating the product in the CIS region. The team prepared all update tests, starting with internal prototypes and the first sandboxes for players, collecting and processing feedback during tests, looking for bugs and inaccuracies. It created news materials for the portal and hundreds of posts in social networks from the very first stage of testing. We made streams, videos, reviews and test broadcasts of all preparatory stages of the update. We wrote songs about the update, answered players' questions, helped with technical problems... During the launch days of the update, the operations team was on duty at night and responded to the first messages in the game on the day of release.

Wargaming company

When we started to figure it out, it turned out that the players considered the sound of the tank, which they heard in movies, TV shows or other games, to be realistic. As a result, there is now a sound in tanks that balances on the verge of realism and fiction, artistic realism. The players accepted this option and were happy. "

Emotions

Over the years, World of Tanks has become a space where people come first of all for emotions: for the joy of victory, for the thrill of a fight, confidence in teammates. Players gather in real life to do good deeds, visit museums, restore equipment, spend time with families. World of Tanks started digitally and evolves as a game, but tanks have become a part of real life that unfolds outside of servers. The game brings together people of different ages and different professions, it has become a part of male culture. Tanks are a topic of conversation for inveterate friends and future comrades.
