Fantasy strategy games for pc. The best strategies for pc. Undeservedly forgotten strategies ...

Friends, hello everyone. The Gamebizclub team is on the air, and today we will continue to introduce you to the genres of the world computer games... At the end of May, we dived into and showed 12 of the best games in this genre. And in this article, we will tell you in detail about the best strategy games on PC over the past few years and compose our top best games in this genre.

It would seem that making ratings is not difficult. It is worth taking a list of your favorite games, choosing the best ones and putting them in order. We would have done so, if not for one nuance - the Gamebizclub team gathered people who found Warcraft 1 and Heroes of Might and Magic.

Since then, a lot of games have been released, one way or another, we managed to play most of them and form our opinion. Therefore, we made a plausible rating taking into account all opinions - re-tested old games and new products, refreshed the memory. And here's what happened.

In this article, you will learn:

14. DEFCON

The last place in our ranking goes to DEFCON, a nuclear strike tactics game released in 2006. The name translates as "readiness for defense" - this is the actual scale of the readiness of the US Army for possible hostilities.

DEFCON is based on the plot of the American film "War Games", which shows the global nuclear conflict between the USA and the USSR. Not only the events of the game, but also its style echoes the film, as evidenced by the motto “Everybody dies” (translated as “Everyone will die”).

In DEFCON, you will not be able to create units, gather resources and develop technologies. But you can choose the location of forces on the territory of North or South America, Europe, Russia, Africa or Asia. The game starts when the DEFCON scale shows an alarm level of 5. Then you successively go to the next levels. All this time, the conflict is developing, the tension is growing. When the level reaches 1, you can start a nuclear attack.

The main goal is to inflict damage on the enemy, avoiding their own losses. There are no moral restrictions, so you should only follow your own considerations, desires and emotions. Up to 6 people can participate in the game. Nuclear missiles of various types, fighters, bombers, submarines, aircraft carriers, cruisers, airfields, and radars are used as combat units.

DEFCON is like a real command post, where the president of the country sits and plans military action. There is nothing superfluous - just a map, marks of friendly and enemy troops, the most important targets and cities. And you can do whatever comes to mind: enter the role of the main villain, save peoples and countries, destroy cities and entire regions with one click.

The only negative outweighing all the advantages is that DEFCON does not have a graphics engine. Despite the interesting gameplay, after a while the process of exchanging nuclear warheads gets bored - it becomes boring to move warheads and combat vehicles around the map, destroy secondary countries, and so on.

And all because there are no special effects and any kind of accompaniment. Therefore, it will be suitable instead of a sapper or any other game with low requirements - it takes only 60 MB on your hard disk and will run on any PC.

13. Dune

In thirteenth place is the Dune series of games about the world of Arrakis, which became one of the first real-time strategy games. Dune was released in 1992 on the Sega console, and after a while it became available on the PC. At the time, it was a breakthrough that could only be repeated three years later.

Interesting fact: on behalf of the publishing company Virgin Interactive, two independent developers worked simultaneously on the creation of the game. The French company Cryo Interactive released the game first. American Westwood Studios - a little later. Therefore, the name of the game from Westwood Studios has the number "2".

The plot is based on Frank Herbert's science fiction novel "Dune". In the process of passing you will meet with the main actors, take the role of the leader of one of the great houses and conquer the planet Arrakis.

The only drawback is that the events of the book and the game are weakly connected, the gameplay is based on missions to clear the territory from the enemy and extract a useful resource.

In the struggle for dominance on the planet, three great houses clashed - Atreides, Harkonnen and Ordos. Each home has its own pros and cons, unique technologies, and powerful leaders.

You can choose any house, but then you cannot change it. After choosing, you will be taken to the battlefield, you will command an army, build a base, extract resources and destroy the enemy. It is important - in order to win, you need to destroy all opponents on the map.

For example, if you defeated the enemy base, but one soldier is hiding in the corner of the map and is constantly moving, you will not win until you destroy him.

Dune pioneered the approach that became the foundation of the RTS genre. This is a global map, economic model, command bar and mini-map in user interface, "Fog of war" and different possibilities warring parties.

In 1998, a remake called Dune 2000 was released, and in 2001 the developers continued the series by releasing Emperor: Battle for Dune. Unfortunately, after that, not a single game about Dune appeared again. 15 years have passed, but the series remains only in the memory of the most devoted fans - therefore, only the penultimate place.

12. Age of Empires

We give the twelfth place to Age of Empires, which became the basis for many RTS that came out after it. The first part was released in 1997, and since that time Microsoft Game Studios has released 8 games and 4 add-ons to them. The series also includes Age of Empires Online (MMORTS).

In Age of Empires, you will find yourself as the leader of one of 16 civilizations, reflecting a specific architectural style: Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, Asian and Roman. By completing missions and developing, you will move from era to era - from the Stone to the Iron Age.

Civilization develops through the construction of buildings, technology research and war, where without it. Besides you, there will be several more civilizations on the map competing for resources. Therefore, you will constantly fight - defend yourself behind walls or attack the enemy.

The game contains campaigns, including educational ones. The learning process is based on 12 scenarios explaining game process... This will help you quickly master the basics of control, work effectively with units and fully use the camera. Other campaigns consist of different missions in which you will defend in a fortified fort, attack castle walls, and much more.

Multiplayer is available for a maximum of eight people. To play online, you can choose with whom to fight - with bots or other people. If you choose a mode with other users, you will get the opportunity to make an alliance, declare war on the chosen enemy, or take a neutral position.

Age of Empires doesn't need a powerful computer. Even with the most modest configuration, the game looks realistic, and the image pleases the eye when zoomed in.

For many people, Age of Empires has become a guide to the world of strategies. But the series gradually faded away and lost popularity - the third part was released back in 2005, and there is still no full fourth part, if you do not take into account AoE Online. Therefore, we recommend the game to those who want to see the beginning of the RTS era.

11. Star Wars: Empire at War

In eleventh place, Star Wars: Empire at War is a 2006 game based on the setting of the world famous Star Wars saga. The plot is based on episodes 4, 5 and 6 Star Wars, namely on civil war between rebels and imperials.

You will find yourself in the role of a commander of one of the parties, you will manage the fleet, command in battles with opponents, destroy bases and much more. The storyline consists of missions in which you will meet famous heroes - Darth Vader, Palpatine, Firmus Piett, Han Solo, Boba Fett, Chewbacca and other characters.

Each character gives certain bonuses, and if necessary, you can hire additional supporting characters - agents, smugglers and others.

Star Wars: Empire at War consists of two parts:

  • Conquest of the galaxy is a global strategy game on the galaxy map. In this mode, you will control the planets under your control, study (or steal) technologies, seize strategic resources, attack and defend.
  • Tactical mode - consists of space and ground operations. You will spend a lot of time in this mode, because a lot will depend on the outcome of the battle. It is here that you will see the main combat vehicles, infantry and ships of the two sides, you will be able to show command skills and win.

The main thing is to choose the right side. The Imperials have more opportunities to master new technologies, improve weapons and ships. And the rebels cannot do science, but they know how to steal the technological achievements of the Empire.

Become the lord of the galaxy with Darth Vader or free the planets from the tyranny of the Empire with Luke and his friends. Choose a side and go to battle. You will definitely like it.

Star Wars is a hugely popular project by George Lucas. Therefore, it is not surprising that many interesting games, but we still haven't seen the continuation of Empire at War, which is a pity. Only the eleventh place in our rating, we are moving on.

10. World in Conflict: Soviet Assault

The top ten is closed by World in Conflict: Soviet Assault - a real-time strategy released in 2009 and continuing the events that happened in World in Conflict. In other words, the developers took World in Conflict and added 6 new missions - the game became one and a half times longer.

Gamebizclub opinion: in our opinion, this is the best strategy about the beginning of the Third World War. Events begin with the fall of the Berlin Wall, which is being destroyed by Russian tanks. Soviet troops begin an offensive along the entire front and arrange a meat grinder for NATO forces.

You will find yourself in the role of a Soviet paratrooper and unit commander, who stood at the forefront of the attack, destroying enemy soldiers and equipment. Indescribable feelings!

Combat operations take place either on the territory of Berlin or in the countryside, where one has to fight with NATO troops. You can also command an artillery battery and provide air escort for the convoy.

Each mission has a specific plot, but the main thing is that there is no need to build a base. You command limited set troops, but you can request reinforcements.

The developers could not avoid stereotypes about Russians - the representations of Americans, British, Germans and other peoples are very noticeable and often hurt the eyes. Therefore, in dialogues, sometimes there is a feeling of unreality of what is happening until the hostilities begin.

You can also choose the side of NATO - in this case, the plot will begin on the territory of the United States, where you will defend the cities and the coast. Gradually, you will push back the troops of the USSR and move to Europe. We add that both storylines are inextricably linked, so whichever side you choose wins.

The game attracts with a sharp plot, large-scale battles that take place not only close, but throughout the map - it creates the feeling that you are participating in a large-scale military operation. It all looks very realistic, as if they really were in the center of the battle.

World in Conflict: Soviet Assault is in tenth place only because we did not see the continuation of this series. The game should be on the shelf of every fan of the genre - it's 100%.

9. Stronghold

In ninth place is the Stronghold series of games - a strategy about the Middle Ages, Crusades, knights and kings. The first part of Stronghold was released in 2001, and the last Stronghold 3 in 2011. We add that in 2010 the developers released the first MMORTS - Stronghold Kingdoms, where the game became available online against other people.

The action takes place during the early Middle Ages, so you will enter the role of a baron or a count - you will build a castle, develop production, establish settlements and fight the enemy. Depending on the part you choose, you will be taken to the territory of Europe or Palestine.

Strongold Crusader takes place in the hot lands of Palestine. In the role of a crusader, you will build and defend a castle, establish production, attack the impregnable fortifications of the desert warriors.

Stronghold 3 takes place in Europe. The plot begins seven years after the end of the events of the first part.

The series became successful due to the combination of economic strategy and medieval surroundings. You can build your own castle, lay siege to your neighbor's castle, pour boiling oil and resin over the storming ones - all the medieval romance is present. But before the outbreak of hostilities, it will be necessary to provide the rear with food and develop production, so that everything will be enough for the duration of the war.

Computer opponents are controlled by artificial intelligence - like you, they extract resources, build castles, form their own army and start a war. And in multiplayer, you will be opposed by those people whom you invite to the game - friends, acquaintances or family members.

8. Heroes of Might and Magic III

In eighth place is one of the best turn-based strategy games Heroes of Might and Magic III. Despite the fact that the game was released back in 1999, it still remains the most revered in the turn-based strategy genre. And the following parts of "Heroes", released after it, could not surpass the third part.

The game takes place in a fantasy world where dragons, elves, goblins, gnomes and many other mythical creatures exist. You will lead one of the factions, command a squad, capture and manage cities, explore the world.

The adventure map is difficult to pass in places. Movement in the game world is not always predictable - there are territories where it is very difficult to get and you have to follow an unobvious path.

One of the main tasks is the development of cities in such a way that they bring income, provide combat power and give power to magic spells. If the city is well developed, then it brings enough gold, allows you to hire a strong army to capture adjacent territories and destroy the enemy.

As it should be in a turn-based strategy, time in the game flows discretely. The main unit of time is a move, which is also called a day. During a turn, you can perform a certain number of actions - make a move with heroes, plan the construction of a building, and so on.

And in battle, the actions take place in turn and resemble chess game... Each unit has a certain amount of action points, type of attack and amount of health. The stronger the unit, the harder it hits and the harder it is to kill. The troops are led by a hero who, upon victory, gains experience and artifacts from defeated enemies.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is available in single and multiplayer games. Although multiplayer - loudly said. The first mode is called "Hot Seat" and is translated as a hot seat - two people at the same computer take turns making moves and finding out who is stronger.

The second mode is network. It is necessary to create a separate "room" and give the address of this room to friends and acquaintances. Then you can not sit on the same chair, but really chop on the net.

In 2015, the Heroes of Might and Magic III HD version was released - a remake popular game made for a mid-range PC. We advise everyone - HoMM should be on the shelf of every fan of turn-based strategies. And we move on.

7. Command & Conquer

In seventh place is the famous Command & Conquer - a real-time strategy game about the confrontation between the NoD brotherhood and the World Defense Initiative (if translated into modern realities - Terrorists and the Security Service).

The first part was released back in 1995, and the last one is currently out in 2013. Note that the first part, along with Dune, became the basis for the RTS genre. But when compared to the world of Arrakis, the "Command and Conquer" saga lasted much longer. The two games have one developer - Westwood Studios, so it is quite possible that Dune decided to sacrifice in favor of the more popular C&C.

The Command & Conquer universe includes 3 story sub-series: Tiberium, Red alert and Generals. There are 15 games in total.

The C&C plot is based on the conflict around tiberium - an alien substance sent to Earth by aliens in a meteor shower. This substance extracts minerals, it can be used as an energy source, and in general, tiberium is a valuable element.

World governments consolidate and begin to mine tiberium. At the same time, terrorists are also beginning to extract it, as a result, they are rapidly gaining strength and receive financial injections from countries where there is no Tiberium.

After a while, IVZ decides to put an end to NoD, but that was not the case - the Brotherhood strikes back and a long and exhausting confrontation begins.

You can become a member of the terrorist brotherhood NoD, which seeks to take over the world. But if high ideals are closer, it is worth choosing IVZ. Although the main emphasis is not on the side of the conflict, but on how you will command in battle.

Each game has missions to complete and achieve the set objectives. In principle, everything is simple - build a base, mine tiberium, recruit troops and build military equipment... And then you send an army to attack and command how, where and whom to destroy. Easy?

But the enemy does not sleep, so it is never easy. You will be constantly attacked and tried to smash the base, attack from unexpected directions and deprive you of the opportunity to earn money. Therefore, you need to constantly be prepared for surprise attacks by the enemy, which suddenly appears in the most vulnerable places. The main factor of victory is not superiority in combat power, but the absence of blunders.

It is not known what will happen to the C&C series next. Four years have passed, but there is still no intelligible news and comments. Although there are still many fans of the game who continue to hone their skills in online battles. Therefore, so far only the seventh place.

6. Civilization

We decided to give the sixth place to Civilization - a turn-based strategy about the development of mankind on Earth. The game, created by Sid Meier back in 1991, and its subsequent remakes have been and remain the flagship of the turn-based strategy genre.

Now 6 parts have already been released with modifications and additions. The civilization has received a number of awards and is inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame. V different countries ah sold over 9 million copies - a great success, confirmed by numerous critics from around the world.

The main task is to develop the chosen civilization, starting from primitive society and up to the present. Become Stalin and rule Russia, or take the place of Napoleon, Ramses, George Washington and lead your people on the path to prosperity.

To achieve power and prosperity, you need to build cities, engage in economics and science, create technology and wonders of the world, build up military power, establish diplomatic relations with other civilizations and fight with competitors.

In general, everything is as in real life- put yourself in the shoes of a president or a dictator. Events take place on a given map of the world, chosen randomly or exactly repeating the Earth.

The development of civilization involves settlers, military men, diplomats and other characters (units). You can change the political regime, choosing despotism, monarchy, democracy, communism, republic. The higher the chosen difficulty level, the better you need to plan your actions.

The easiest way is to be a leader - opponents hardly interfere. And the most difficult thing is to be a deity, in this case the whole world will take up arms against you and will constantly put a spoke in the wheels - declare war, suddenly attack, ravage and destroy cities, and so on.

The score is determined according to the results of the game. When calculating points, the number of the population, the number of created wonders of the world and other criteria are taken into account.

Editors' opinion: there were funny moments in the early versions of Civilization. If one people significantly outstripped others in development and began to fight, then its tanks and infantry clashed with knights, swordsmen, crossbowmen and other units of the Middle Ages, and sometimes antiquity. And often tanks lost when several units of earlier eras attacked simultaneously. In Civilization VI, the developers improved the balance, but moments still arise - with a coordinated attack, crossbowmen and catapults can destroy a tank.

The main feature of the game is the opportunity to see the development of civilization, take part in this process and rewrite history. Imagine the Aztecs launch the first satellite into space, the Egyptians are building the Pentagon in Cairo, the Romans are launching the Stealth bomber.

Within the framework of game mechanics everything is possible. The last part of the game at the moment was released in 2016, and the continuation should be expected in 2019-2020.

5. Total War

We decided to give the fifth place Total war- a series of historical games where tactics and strategy are organically combined. In the series itself - 10 parts and 7 additions. The first part was created in 2000, and the last one is currently out in 2016 under the name Total War: WARHAMMER.

The main feature of Total War is the transfer in time to a specific era in the development of mankind. In the story, you will find yourself in Japan during the Warring States era, in Europe during the Napoleonic era, in the Middle Ages and earlier. In the role of Attila you will conquer the European continent, in the role of Charlemagne you will create an invincible empire, in the role of Peter the Great you will bring Russia to the level of the leading world powers.

To describe Total War in a nutshell, the most appropriate are big battles. In addition to capturing cities, forging economic ties and production cycles, you will be at war. The war consists of many battles of different scales, and you will command an army in each of them. Sieges of castles, defense of cities, ambushes and wall-to-wall battles - there is everything that fans of the genre need.

In the strategic mode, battles are fought on a global turn-based map, where cities, armies, territorial boundaries, valuable resources and roads are marked. And in tactical mode, you are transported to the battlefield, to a real area with hills, trees, buildings and other details of the landscape.

If you get tired of constant battles - click "automatic calculation of results". With a great superiority of your army, the enemy will be defeated without your participation.

But if the forces are equal or the enemy is outnumbered, then you cannot do without your participation. In the "automatic calculation of the totals" you will most likely lose, but in the manual mode there are chances to win. Moreover, it often happens that a smaller army first defends itself, and then successfully advances and cuts out the fleeing enemy troops - but only if you command the army.

Defeats also happen, so where can we go without them. But after each defeat, you will learn to think and make non-standard decisions, manage troops more efficiently and skillfully use the landscape features.

Let's give an example - if you are defending a city, then you have to sit outside the walls and not make sorties. But if the enemy let the army down too quickly, and the siege equipment is only on the way and is slowly moving along the walls - boldly lead the commander and cavalry units into the attack, try to destroy the siege towers and the ram in the first place. Without them, the enemy will not fight much.

In major battles, armies of several thousand people clash. Considering that most armies have the maximum number of units (15-20 depending on the version of the game), several units of the maximum size take part in the largest battles - this is enough to cover half the map with the bodies of fallen soldiers.

You could write a lot about Total War, but we will say this - do you want to become Tsar Leonidas and lead the Spartans? So do it. You can take more people into battle than 300 elite fighters. And in the end, kick one place for Xerxes, completely changing the course of history. Therefore, Total War is in the top five.

4. Halo Wars 2

The fourth place goes to Halo Wars 2 - the continuation of the saga about the war between people and alien invaders. The series, developed by Microsoft, has been trending for over 15 years. Several dozen books and one film have already been released on the plot of the game, and this is not the end. The series is developing, and after a while we will see a continuation in the form of a shooter, and maybe another film.

And now the backstory: in the distant future, humans populated many planets and controlled a large swath of space until they collided with the Covenant empire. The collision took place on the outskirts of "human space" and ended with the destruction of several patrol corvettes and a planet with a population of ten million people.

Since that moment, the events have developed badly for people - dozens of lost systems, hundreds of millions of ruined lives and the loss of half of the fleet. In such a situation, KKON decides to send the colonial ship "Spirit of Fire" to an unexplored sector of space for colonization.

Halo Wars 2 begins with people waking up from a cryo sleep at The Ark, a space structure created by a mysterious ancient race. When landing on a space object, the soldiers collide with the army of the Covenants - the war overtakes the colonists.

Battles break out throughout the "Arch", both sides lose soldiers and equipment. The conflict is developing rapidly, and only you can defeat the enemy.

The gameplay in Halo Wars 2 is not very different from other strategies - building a base, collecting energy and supplies (they can be collected by ordinary soldiers), forming an army and fighting. That said, Halo Wars 2 is a story-driven game in which you participate.

There are many additional assignments to be performed. For example, in one mission you will destroy the enemy with one Spartan with a machine gun, push through force shields and free prisoners - each mission is like that.

Microsoft made more than just RTS, but a high budget strategy. The graphics and image quality look amazing - the soldiers, equipment, buildings and other details are made to a very high level. And you will remember the local beauty for a long time. This is a proprietary Halo feature that Microsoft is actively developing.

Halo Wars 2 is a stunningly beautiful strategy game that you can play for hours without stopping. She will go to Xbox one and PC. That being said, there is one small drawback. For PC owners, it may seem that tasks are being completed too quickly. I would like to put it in the top three, but in terms of "legendary" it loses to more successful strategies. Let's move on to them.

3. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III

We decided to give the bronze to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III - an epic strategy about the war of the empire of people against other races in space. Since its release in 2004, 3 parts of the game have already appeared, and the last one was released on April 27, 2017.

The world of the War Hammer is very large. Everything in it is tied to a tough confrontation between several races - people, orcs, elves, chaos, necromancers and other factions. Moreover, each faction has its own policy, troops, development path and other features that make it different from the rest.

The events of the plot unfold on the surface of the planets, where representatives of different races collide in a bloody battle. As a result, only one winner remains, and the rest are ruthlessly destroyed.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3 entered the top three, and this is justified - the game is new, made at a very high level, and the plot continues the established traditions of the Warhammer series. The graphics and design of locations and nature, combat vehicles and infantry, buildings and heroes are pleasing to the eye - if you have a widescreen monitor, you seem to be transported into the distant future. But in the gameplay, little has changed - this is still a strategy performed in the classic style.

On the battlefield, you will build a base, recruit infantry and build combat vehicles, form units and throw them into battle with the enemy. Try to take into account the vulnerabilities of each fighter or combat vehicle: light BMs lose to heavy ones, anti-tank squads will quickly multiply the coolest tank by zero, but are vulnerable to infantry, and infantry is afraid of snipers and light vehicles. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

There is also an interesting feature - for the first time, unique super-heavy warriors appeared that turn the battle upside down. Phantom Knight for the Eldar, Imperial Knight for Humans, and Orcish Stompa for Orcs. But they appear closer to the end of the plot, so it won't be possible to steer them for a long time.

Multiplayer - in the classic 1v1, 2v2, and so on. It's simple - choose a race, build a base and try to quickly take out your opponents. Well, or they endure you, it all depends on the skill.

Overall, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III is pure drive. The plot and battles are captivating and literally do not leave the monitor screen. In the heat of battle, you don't even have time to pay attention to the bloopers in the voice acting and the phrases of the heroes. For example, imagine orcs speaking normal Russian - a fantastic sight. Bronze - well-deserved, let's move on.

2. StarCraft II

Second place goes to StarCraft II, a popular real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The first part of the game, called Wings of Liberty, was released in 2010, and in 2013 and 2015 - the second and third add-ons Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.

StarCraft 2 is the premier strategy game in esports. Starcraft championships are held regularly, the winners receive valuable prizes. Note that the game is inferior in popularity to other representatives of esports - CS: GO, Dota 2, League of Legends.

Still, she has millions of fans from different countries, and the first day after the release of Legacy of the Void, sales amounted to more than 1 million. Simply put, StarCraft II remains very popular.

Time and place of action - a distant part of the Milky Way, XXVI century. The plot is built on the war of three races - protoss, zerg, terrans. Terrans are the descendants of exiled criminals who have severed all ties with their home planet. Zerg are mutated creatures from various planets ruled by the Overmind and the Queen of Blades. Protoss are representatives of a high-tech civilization with psionic abilities.

StarCraft 2 is a classic strategy game. Choosing one of the races, you will build a base and combat units, extract resources, develop technologies, form armies and participate in battles. To win, you must destroy buildings, the main base and destroy all enemies.

For example, if at least one builder survives, then after five or ten minutes of the game you run the risk of running into the second base of the enemy, who will have time to prepare for the defense.

In single-player mode, you will follow the storyline, complete 26 missions, meet the main characters and get used to the gameplay. In addition to the plot, you can pass tests that require special ingenuity. If you pass successfully, you will receive a medal. After everything has passed, you can proceed to multiplayer.

V network game players from the CIS, USA, Asia and Europe can take part. Here you can make friends, organize a clan (online community), participate in tournaments and make your way to the big championship. The better your skill, the more chances you have to win something. If you want to achieve good results, train on different maps, communicate with people and see what professional players are doing.

Starcraft II should be on every fan of the genre's list of games. It will stay on trend for a few more years, and then Blizzard will surpass themselves and release the third part. Bliz did this before - an example of Diablo before their eyes. Now let's move on to the winner of our rating.

1. Warcraft III

Gold goes legendary game Warcraft iii- real-time strategy and RPG, made in the fantasy genre. Blizzard Entertainment developed and released the game in 2002, with sales exceeding 2 million copies in its first month. We put Warcraft III first for just one reason, which is called the best game in every sense.

To be clear, Warcraft has long established the principles of RTS and RPG that remain relevant 15 years later. All modern RPGs and MMORPGs with an open world in one way or another use the development system laid down by Warcraft 3.

Fantasy races, an interesting plot, combat and magic mechanics - all this organically combines and makes you come back to the game again and again. And it is no coincidence that World of Warcraft and Dota 2 remain in the top - they continue the genre laid down in the third Warcraft.

We add that the plot of the game was filmed, released in 2016. The box office grossed more than $ 300 million in several months of rental worldwide - this is a great success that very few people can repeat.

We figured out the popularity, now let's talk about the gameplay and the fundamental differences from other strategies.

Warcraft III is a classic strategy game with RPG elements... Everything from strategy here: from building a base and recruiting an army to tactics of battles on the map. You have a small army at your disposal, limited by the number of farms that produce food for it.

Workers extract gold in mines, cut wood and build structures - barracks, farms, workshops and other buildings. And the RPG component is about leveling up the heroes.

According to the plot, in each task you control a hero who increases the level by destroying the enemy, uses artifacts, applies powerful abilities and spells. The higher the level of the hero, the stronger he is and the more powerful the damage from his abilities.

The plot is based on a bloody confrontation between two races - humans and orcs. There are also night elves, gnomes, undead and other races that influence the balance of power in battle. Someone will be your ally, someone will show fierce resistance and will be destroyed - it all depends on the side chosen.

Fighting takes place on maps - in locations with forests, rivers, lakes, mines and neutral characters. The picture quality may seem a little dated, but this is the level of 2002 when the PC requirements were very different. But W3 will run on any computer, plus you can hack over the network with other people from different countries. There are still enough fans of the game.

Warcraft 3 should be a favorite of every strategy fan. Best of the Best - just like that and nothing else. And we are waiting for news about Warcraft 4, rumors have been circulating for two years, and Blizzards are silent.

Summing up

Despite the fact that the strategy genre is gradually losing ground, there are still decent strategies like Halo Wars 2 or Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3. And we see a new trend - developers are trying to make games interesting. The new games feature an exciting plot, elaborate unit models and beautiful location designs.

Let's see what will happen in two or three years - perhaps we will see a really interesting and exciting strategy and we will definitely write about it. Good luck to everyone, bye-bye.

Strategy is a vital part of PC culture. Whether you love fast-paced real-time combat or clever turn-based simulations, great strategy games immerse you in unique, massive scenarios that give you the power to rule empires, control races exploring space, and command cavalry onslaught against enemy armies.

We present to you our selection of the best strategies for PC. Regardless of whether you like real-time battles or turn-based battles, strategies allow you to take part in large-scale events, rule empires, control powerful races and fearlessly fight against armies of many thousands. That's why we love them. But we love some more than others.

As is the case with a selection of the best first-person shooters, we tried to make the list as diverse as possible and collect the most worthy representatives of the genre, who are still capable of taking your breath away. The article will definitely be updated as new great strategies are released.

Do you agree with our choice? Do you want to top up this list? Share your suggestions in the comments.

Dropouts from the main list

The game exploits the lack of opportunity very cleverly, often presenting the player with difficult choices. You can only scan six points at a time, while the game regularly throws up opportunities for battle. You need to look for new recruits; engineers must build new communication centers to establish contacts with new territories; resources are needed to improve weapons and armor. You can't get everything at once. You may have to be content with one of this list. Back in 1989, Sid Meier described the game as "a series of interesting decisions," and XCOM 2 is by far the most accurate expression of those words ever to come out of the hands of Firaxis.

Red Alert is perhaps the least strategy-related on our list. To win absolutely any battle, it is enough to be the first to build a technical center and send 25 mammoths to the enemy base, or simply send a chinook, packed to overflowing with simple girls Tanyusha, directly to the rear of the enemy. In a sense, the lack of balance was one of the reasons for the huge popularity of this title. Even now, the chaos that is happening in the battles there on land, sea and in the air remains attractive. In addition, the game was made free.

By simplifying the XCOM formula, Firaxis took a shorter route to things that have always been the essence of the series. Basically it is squad action, a game in which you take care of your favorite and unique squad with all your might. Whether you're putting your fighters in bulky war machines, or giving them the names of your friends (or both), Enemy Within surpasses other strategies due to the need to be very serious about your decisions.

For this iteration of Sid Meier's game of global supremacy, Firaxis built from scratch new engine... It was the first game in the series to use 3D effects and shine with the inimitable voice of the legend Leonard Nimoy. In a wide range of innovations and improvements, a smarter, more aggressive AI was on a separate line. It is worth noting that it was from this part that the modding of the game became easier, which resulted in the emergence of several excellent add-ons created by the players. Civilization fans can argue for hours about which part is the best in the series, but my favorite is the four.

The trick of FS is that both opposing sides make their moves at the same time. You have to not only plan the movement of your squad of cyber soldiers, but also anticipate the actions of the enemy. Before confirming the move, the game allows you to look at the actions being taken so that the player can avoid the very obvious ones. In one of my best games, I deliberately sent a soldier under enemy fire in order to distract the enemy while the rest of my fighters came in from the flank. Study the previews of the move to act with flawless precision, avoiding losses.

BattleTech, which can be described as a mixture of a board game with XCOM design, is a deep and thoughtful turn-based strategy game with an impressive campaign system. You control a group of mercenaries, wisely distributing available funds and updating your collection of battle suits and robots.

In battles, it is necessary to aim at specific parts of enemy robots, taking into account the strength of their armor, the rate of fire, the angle at which the fire is fired, and the features of the environment. At first, all this is difficult to understand, since the game is not particularly friendly to beginners, but if you like rich in details strategies or are already familiar with this universe, then BattleTech will definitely suit your taste.

Northgard's real-time strategy game, set in the Viking Age, borrows a lot from projects such as Settlers and Age of Empires, and also invites us to dive into a unique expansion system that allows us to gradually increase the area of the controlled territories.

The weather also plays an important role in the gameplay. It is necessary to prepare especially carefully for winter, however, if you select the appropriate branch in the technology development tree, then the winter on your lands will be warmer than on enemy territories which will give you a strategic advantage. A frankly boring story is offset by a great design story missions and incredibly exciting battles in the battle mode.

An almost perfect tactical action game with robots and a chic design from the creators of FTL. In Into the Breach, you have to fight off waves of Vek monsters on maps divided into 64 sectors, where various fortresses and important objects are located. Of course, the easiest way to get rid of the Vek monsters is to wipe them off the face of the earth with the help of your robots and air attacks, but for this you have to think strategically and keep enemies away from your buildings.

Civilian buildings provide you with electricity, which serves as a kind of health bar here. Whenever the enemy attacks such a building, you get one step closer to defeat. Once you run out of electricity, your team will travel back in time and try to save the world again. It's a pretty challenging, compact and dynamic adventure. As you unlock new types of robots and upgrades for them, you will gradually learn new ways to fight the merciless enemy.

The first Total War: Warhammer showed that the fantasy universe of Games Workshop is ideal for large-scale battles and amazing detail of the battlefield - this is what Creative Assembly is known for. In the second part, many improvements awaited us - in the interface, appearance and skills of heroes, as well as armies of various factions.

The four factions represented (Skaven, High Elves, Dark Elves and Lizardmen) are strikingly different from each other, and when they were created, the authors thoroughly studied the prehistory of the rich Warhammer universe. If you have long wanted to get acquainted with the world of Warhammer, but did not know where to start, then this game is perfect for you. And if you already have a beautiful original, then you will find one large-scale campaign, which takes place on a single giant map.

The War of the Chosen add-on brings to the game both a number of minor trivia and quite interesting elements such as colorful chatty enemies that appear in random order as you progress through the main campaign, each of which has strong and weak sides... You will also find new types of enemy soldiers, thousands of cosmetic changes, zombie-like enemies inhabiting abandoned cities, the ability to create propaganda posters, and much more.

As a result, every campaign in War of the Chosen is a little oversaturated, but the changes are so well done that no XCOM 2 fan should pass by.

At first glance, the name of the game sounds just blasphemous. More than ten years after the release of the last Homeworld, they decided to transform the game they remembered for its spaceships and moving in three-dimensional space, in the next ground strategy about tanks? Is it also a prequel? Nevertheless, despite all the fears that arose, Desert of Kharak turned out to be successful in all respects.

This is not only an amazing RTS that sets itself apart from the rest of the contemporaries of the genre, but also an excellent representative of Homeworld, who reimagined the series and clearly captured its magic.

The best game in the series so far, with so many different details that it seems like it came out right away with a couple of expansions. The area system allows you to build huge cities and motivates you to think through your actions a few steps forward. Separate praise deserves the amazing design of the game - yes, you don't get used to the local cartoon style right away, but over time it becomes clear that this decision has benefited the project.

It’s very interesting to see what new additions will bring to this already rich game, which is the undisputed peak of the entire legendary series.

“Hopefully future patches and additions will fill in the gaps,” wrote one of the journalists in his own on the day it was released. While the sci-fi project from Paradox still has room to grow, the high rate of updates and their regular release are definitely good for the game.

For example, with the addition of Utopia, the internal political system of the game underwent significant changes (not to mention a hundred other minor innovations), which gave us another hundred hours of gameplay. In addition, here you can now build Dyson spheres around the stars in order to pump out energy from them, dooming nearby planets to icing. A cruel but mesmerizing sight.

Endless Legend was one of the unexpected breakthroughs last year. Following on from Amplitude's Endless Space, EL's 4X fantasy strategy game was very good, but still not fully realized the developers' potential. Its release went unnoticed thanks to the entry into the market of the high-budget Civilization: but EL rightfully became the best game in the genre since the fourth Civilization.

It is deeper and more diverse, it has amazing asymmetric factions, subraces, heroes, quests, and so on and so forth. And she looks, moreover, just gorgeous.

As a social experiment as it is a strategy game, Neptune's Pride pits humans against each other in a battle for the star system. The rules are simple: develop your systems, build ships and send them to conquer new systems. The war unfolds slowly, for a week or so, and requires attention, which can slightly spoil your real life.

Simple yet elegant mechanics condone forging and breaking alliances, which can result in an insidious attack by yesterday's friends on your systems. Naturally, at three o'clock in the morning, while you watch the second dream. An affordable game that produces a ton of amazing drama.

I still love the first two Red Alerts, because there are practically no bad titles in the Westwood C&C series, but everything is perfect in this part: here are the most interesting campaigns, the best units, beautiful maps and, of course, gorgeous videos.

The factions differ from each other in all respects and have much more uniqueness than it was in the original game - take at least the Soviet octopuses and dolphins on the side of the allies. Here the authors found the perfect balance between self-irony and sincerity in the cutscenes, and therefore the game was both captivating and brought a smile at the right moments.

What, alas, cannot be said about the natural disaster in the face of EA's Red Alert 3.

If you've ever dreamed of conquering space at the head of an armada of customizable colossus starships, this strategy is for you. It has a smart, creative AI, and one full game may take weeks.

You will have to monitor the economy, technology, diplomacy, culture, build up military power, forge alliances, fight wars and dominate the rest of the peoples of the galaxy. It resembles the games of the Civilization series, but only on a larger scale and, in some places, much deeper.

In terms of its mechanics, Homeworld is a phenomenal strategy game with a fully three-dimensional game space. She was among the first representatives of the hot, tore him from one single plane.

What's more, the game boasts a chic atmosphere and sound design, from Adagio for strings in the opening missions to heartbeat drum rolls in multiplayer battles. If you like the rebooted Battlestar Galactica, be sure to play Howmeworld.

With the scale of battles in Supreme Commander, only Total War can compete. Here you give an order to a specific engineer, then turn the mouse wheel - and you observe the battlefield from a bird's eye view. And a couple of seconds later you are already looking at the face of another soldier, a few kilometers from the first. Even my head is spinning.

The clash of armies of slender columns of hundreds of robots rewards the player with the most delightful gunplay the processor can handle. SupCom is one of the very few RTSs that combine naval, ground and air vehicles in one battle. And even more - with artillery, tactical nuclear weapons and experimental robots of titanic proportions.

In addition to being the successor to the best competitive strategy game of the past decade, SC2 also deserves credit for rethinking the structure of the traditional RTS campaign. A good example similar is the Heart of the Swarm, but the beginning was laid by the "human" Wings of Liberty: an intricate adventure, each new mission brings to the table a mixture of working formulas.

From a scenario of defending against a zombie invasion to a planet flooded with lava every few minutes, SC2 forces the player to re-learn all of its basic elements.

Not the most obvious contender for getting into this list, Tooth and Tail drew us in with its simple look at RTS (and the game was clearly created for controllers), in which all the components of an excellent strategy were preserved. The game is even closer in spirit to Pikmin than Halo Wars - the units here gather around your character and follow the simplest orders, and the creation of units occurs automatically, relying on the population limit and available resources.

The battles last no more than 10 minutes, and the action takes place against the backdrop of a well-written political conflict between the factions of anthropomorphic animals.

The game that is remembered today as the ancestor of Warcraft III is primarily an inventive and ambitious strategy game that introduced many gamers to cinematic fantasy.

Here, for the first time, RPG elements in the form of heroes and neutral units were introduced, which had not been seen before in any strategy, and the large-scale campaign told an amazing story that completely captured the player thanks to its impeccable execution. As a bonus, amusing phrases from units reacting to invocation were attached.

The series' transition to full 3D marked the crossing of a milestone, beyond which gradually accumulating problems led to instability at the Empire release and long-term AI issues that plagued players in the later games of the series.

The original Rome presented us with the unpretentious yet gripping face of an ancient war, and it did it in a masterpiece. A magnificent excursion into one of the most curious eras military history, interesting to this day.

It was a great temptation to put the first part of "Dawn of War" on this list, but it was decided to stop at its experimental sequel, replacing large units with a handful of the coolest space thugs with sets of murderous abilities.

To deal with the Orc hordes, you have to control these genetically modified special forces, coordinating their actions with the raids of the Stormtroopers, the aimed fire of the Scouts and the cover of the detachments of heavy weapons. And the Last Stand co-op mode is also great.

SSE uses some 4X strategy tricks, but makes them work in an RTS wrapper. This is a game about star empires that grow, prosper and die in the distant space of the distant future. Well, and about how the huge starships of these empires emerge from hyperspace to the blazing worlds.

Diplomacy is also available, but these are huge starships! Play the Rebellion expansion and see how these very ships grow to truly incredible sizes.

CKII is a political strategy. It is not only about how the player leads his troops into battle, but also about the wedding of his imbecile niece. Each character matters, each has its own goals and desires. Yes, it's difficult (blame the feudal system for this), but you can get your own personal drama, right here and now.

The situation often drives the player into a corner, into desperate situations, forcing him to do terrible things for the sake of power. Once I had to execute a newborn baby so that his older and smarter sister could rule. The Middle Ages were still times.

DEFCON's ominous blue world map is the perfect stage for a macabre story about the beginning nuclear war... First, you prepare for Armageddon by stocking up warehouses with supplies, placing silos, nuclear submarines, and setting up missile defenses. This organizational stage of the game itself is interesting for its strategic component, but the really cool DEFCON gets when the rockets are sent into the sky.

Blasting spots of explosions, counting casualties as city after city turns to radioactive ashes. When the dust settles, the formal victory will hardly worry anyone. The multiplayer, where a sheer nightmare is happening, is simply amazing.

Some games try to distance themselves from the emotional side of the war that just ended. But not Company of Heroes. She is tense, difficult and brutal.

Of course, the game uses purely Hollywood tricks (the mud sultans of artillery fire migrated here straight from Saving Private Ryan), but the result is the most intense strategy in the world, perfectly capturing the tactical imbalance of World War II.

A deep strategic component and transparent turn-based combat system made Xenonauts a model among game reboots. If you are an old fan of the X-COM series, forget about your ancient discs and fossil graphics from twenty years ago. The best way to remember those glorious days is to turn on the Xenonauts. If you are not familiar with X-COM, this game will give you the chance to enjoy the origins of the series with refined mechanics and details.

After Rome, the series quickly went to a dead end, dragging on itself a heap of problems. But Shogun 2 still managed to become the game that fans wanted to see Total War again. A chic setting, polished mechanics and the honor of your leader balancing between Buddhism and Christianity. The real difference is between the clans (Chsokabe archers are the best!), And some particularly fun special units like the Kish ninja bombers.

Shogun 2 also offered something as cool as a co-op campaign for two players - a great (albeit slow) way to conquer a continent. The follow-up to TWS2, Rome 2 became extremely ambitious, but failed to achieve the fine balance and mechanics that Creative Assembly succeeded in Shogun 2. In the second expansion, Fall of the Samurai, players were offered a fantastic campaign already in the era of gunpowder the middle of the 19th century. Shotguns, swords, ninjas - there is everything your heart desires.

In 2012, strategy expert Tim Stone described the game as a "fresh and friendly" wargame, praising the impressive AI. To defeat the computer generals, you will have to use the advantages of the battlefield to the fullest and diversify tactics.

A simple and accessible interface lowers the barrier to entry, which is usually high in wargames. And by exploring the intricacies of the system, you will discover incredible depths of mechanics.

Age of Empires gave us the opportunity to live centuries of progress in half-hour game sessions, but RoN went further, smartly introducing elements of turn-based strategy like Civilization. Instead of directly leading your troops into battle, you expand the state by rebuilding new cities.

When countries' borders collide, a technological race ensues between nations, a war of influence interspersed with missile strikes and spear throws. Can you ever get bored of the process of crushing archers and knights with tanks and stealth bombers?

The list could not do without this game, even taking into account the fact that Rise of Nations developed all the ideas laid down here to the maximum. Age of Empires II still looks very decent on PC thanks to the HD re-release, for which add-ons are still being released. The latest was Rise of the Rajas, released at the end of 2016. Not bad at all for a game that is almost 20 years old.

Create huge armies, upgrade them, collect resources and enjoy exciting campaigns in this RTS. And if you get tired of the proposed campaigns, then you can always download amateur add-ons or even create your own scripts. We are looking forward to the release of the fourth part of the game.

I'll clarify one point right away. In this top, we did not consider all fantasy games (of which huge number in a variety of genres), but only MMO-RPG. Although it took a long time to choose, because most MMO-RPGs are pure fantasy. And choosing the best of them is not so easy.

This collection had to be compiled with many factors in mind. Firstly, the interesting and original gameplay. And, yes, interesting comes first, because original game with awkward controls and incomprehensible gameplay - this is not our option. Secondly, the originality of the world was also considered - believe me, although in Tolkien's fantasy “this is our everything”, this genre is not limited to the world he invented. And thirdly, we chose games according to the principle of how the players relate to them. As a result, we got the following picture.

10. World of Warcraft

Classic MMO-RPG. The project, which has existed for more than a dozen years, is the same MMO that many players grew up on, and which, by all means, cannot be passed by. Many other games were made (and continue to be made) according to the principle "like in WoW", or at least taking into account the experience of this game. And, despite the fact that the last add-ons came out not as successful as the original and the first two add-ons, the good old Warcraft is still more than competitive, which means it is recommended for everyone.

9. Blood and Soul

Not a bad Korean-made project. In many ways, this is a classic Korean MMO, with all the main features like epic battles and ladies in armor. But at the same time, the game is really good, because all the classic elements are correctly balanced and seasoned with a certain amount of originality. The plot is simple - another fight between good and evil. Not a bad class system - you choose the class that suits you as you progress. In general, enough unnecessary words, you better try this project - you will like it.

8. Reborn

Another online RPG from Korean manufacturers. Character creation, gameplay - all this is done in the classic style typical for this type of RPG. But this is accompanied by very nice graphics, a lot of social interactions, interesting events that happen almost daily in Reborn, and others. interesting moments, for which, to be honest, you need to write a separate review. Although, you can always personally look at all this - to do this, just register and start playing.

7. Karos

And again the Korean MMO. At first glance, it is standard again. Only, this impression passes quickly. The graphics here really do not differ much from other similar projects, and the gameplay looks similar - but the game has its own, very interesting features... Convenient and not boring pumping, an interesting development system that differs from that in most other games, an interesting PvP system and many other features. Karos is an interesting and original MMO RPG that you simply must try.

6. Panzar

A completely non-standard project from Russian developers. A session-based action game tailored exclusively for PvP, with good physics, realistic graphics and dynamic gameplay. No Korean randomness, no boring swing - there are no such elements in principle. But there are interesting battles, a well-thought-out crafting system and original character classes. The project, I'm not afraid of this word, is unique in its kind, so it is worth paying attention to. It's worth it.

5. Aion

We're back to Korean-made games again. Although Aion stands out favorably from a number of similar projects. No, not a plot, it is just simple and uncomplicated. But the gameplay is really interesting here. Excellent and varied PvP, well-developed PvE modes, a variety of playable classes, a good character creation system. Plus various interesting buns like funny mounts or your own manor. In general, I recommend trying this project, which, by the way, has recently become free.

4. Dark Age

An original and very popular game all over the world. An interesting and dark plot that would be quite suitable for a single-player game, an unusual set of races and related classes, an excellent character customization system. And here you determine not only the appearance of your alter ego - you also choose the date of birth, and with it the sign of the zodiac. Moreover, this will have a certain impact on the gameplay. By the way, about him - pumping in the game is simple, the quests are simple, in general, you will not get bored. In short, this is one of those games that are well worth your time.

3. Nosgoth

And again the dark world, and again the drama. A game about the confrontation between people and vampires in a very interesting universe. The original setting (no elves, orcs and the like), interesting gameplay (which varies greatly depending on the chosen side) and a great storyline. However, this game is the heir to the great Legacy of Kain, which means that it could not be otherwise. All those who love dark fantasy - here.

2. Neverwinter Online

Another game with famous ancestors. No grind, no tediousness with the extermination of tens of thousands of mobs to get a level. Interesting quests, a plot that is impossible to tear yourself away from and a magnificent PvE. What else? We also have a classic set of races and classes - a classic one for the Dungeons & Dragons system. It is classic with its variety and set of roles, from which you can always choose the one that suits you. In general, the game is worth watching and appreciating, if only because it did not put its eminent ancestors to shame.

1. Tera Online

And in the first place we have a really interesting project. Despite the fact that it looks like a classic Korean MMO-RPG, its developers were not afraid to make their brainchild with a certain amount of hardcore and originality. There is an interesting set of classes at the very beginning, and non-targeting in the gameplay, and an interesting plot that can lead players to who knows where. Everything comes with great graphics and a lot of useful (or useless, but nice) goodies. In general, the project is one of those that every self-respecting gamer is simply obliged to appreciate.
